Just something I am thinking about from an arm's length - thought it would be good to get everyone's opinion...

Looking at the Axe STRICTLY as an FX device, both are $2K, both are easily folded into the rack, and there it is. The Axe has more capabilities to grow, but Eventide's not a toy :D

Thanks :salute:

I had both, and I preferred the ease of use when it came to programming the Axe-Fx. The Eclipse is fairly limited as to what it can do compared to the Axe-Fx, even when just comparing effects vs effects.

Interesting, thank you... Have you either right now? And if not, what made you abandon ship?

I found I'm more of a "meat and potatoes" kinda guy. All I need is a nice delay, chorus and reverb, so the Intellifex that I used for so many years actually suited me the best. I'd like to get another Axe-Fx someday, but it's not a high priority at the moment. I don't think I'd get another Eclipse because of the interface and limits with the algorithms. When spending that kind of coin, I'd like something a bit more versatile. Even with the latest firmware, there was still preset switching lag which you'll have to overcome with some fiddling.

FWIW, I got my Eclipse for like under $1200 shipped.

I just got the Axe Fx for the very same reason you are considering it. Don't have the Eclipse, but I can tell you the FX on the Axe are as good as anything you'll ever find in that price range. The effects are just insane; the Ultra is worth every penny, and it only took a couple of minutes for me to figure that out. It's a breeze to program and you still have the added benefit of all the amp and cab sims (BTW, have you heard some of the Bogner sims?? IMO, those are the most impressive  )

At any rate, you probably won't have any problem turning over an Ultra either if you don't like it. Not sure what the used market for the Eclipse is.

what about the TC 2290 in classifieds?
It's more a think about expansiveness - I'm an Eventide fanboi, through and through... But the Axe is striking me as a good deal nowadays, as mentioned, once the price dropped sub $2K, I was going to consider it.

I suppose one of the pluses for me considering this as a purchase is that I can go DI and lay tracks without making a peep. Helps, as often at times, I make music out of my home, and not necessarily the session space. I have a few amps in my study/office/manpod, they're the ones I use, figure out, experiment with, etc. (Mak4 is currently in there), but when it comes to driving 'em hard, off to the sound room they go.

Long story short, the sims/emus of the AFX-Ultra are appealing to do "quiet time" tracking. But if the Eventide Eclipse was even remotely close in its flexibility and configurability, I'd be in like flynn, cuz as mentioned, I love me some Eventides...and much like above, I too am a meat and potatoes and hot searing glass tube hard pumpin' amp kinda guy :D

Just poking around right now, that's all. But thanks thus far for all the opines!!

I have the Axe and sold all of my effects and Pedals. The effects are worth it alone. I actually prefer some of the amp sims and get more out of it then all the amps I have. I use it for recording into my MacPro with the Apogee Duet. Most of my recording is when I have alone time at night so the silent part is excellent. Delays and reverbs are great and the dirt boxes pretty much nail it. Thats about all the effects I use out of it.

Out of amp sims, I use MK IV, SLO 100 leads (toss up with the VH4s) , Fender Twin/Deluxe/JC120 for cleans and have A/B'd my 20th X with it and have it damn close to the same as my settings.

Great piece of gear no matter how you use it. Even would be good for a back up if your preamp/tube blew.

I personally like the TC and Lexicon fx far better than either, and I have owned the Axe and Eclipse. I like the flavor of a 2290 or PCM. You may not.

But to answer your question, the Axe would probably suit you more. I think most of the Eclipses fx are more musical sounding, but for all the reasons given, at the same price point the Axe just has more to offer.

Wait for the fx only version of the Axe,or the one from Strymon. ;)

Axe-FX Ultra ordered today...

Voodoo Labs GCP being ordered Tuesday.

Done

Each of the holy trinity have their strong points.................

Lexicon for verbs

TC for delays

Eventide for pitch

Any one is very good but if you are not looking for Bradshaw mixers and 1400 pages of manuals I would go Axe-fx, here is my rig to show you I have gone the long drawn out route..............

The roland stuff is the shit btw.

Agreed. I'm not giving up my Eventides - not yet anyway... I'm going to try this AFX-U unit out for the allowed 2 weeks, and if I'm not cool with it, back it goes - $100 shipping to me is worth knowing for certain whether or not this little box is all that and a bag of chips.

I've seen a lot of people spewing about the capabilities of this lil' unit, and it's time for me to decide whether or not it's the real deal - to me, anyway.

Soon see, thanks for all your input cats

PS - I couldn't see a pic, but I viewed source and will cut'n'paste instead - no worries...

Greatly appreciated information... You nailed it on the head, I'm eager to track material but sometimes a) I don't feel like disrupting my house, b) I don't feel like hanging around my studio space at all hours of the night. I've got a decent firewire/MIDI preamp (ProFire610) that I believe will work fine for going DI.

Am I stoked?? More intrigued at this point in time. The new rig - the Mak4 - had me hit a wall (again) with the fact I can't get all my FX mounted on a board, with options of mono and stereo, with my Lehle active splitter, unless I coerced the time and energy of Mr. Bradshaw which I ain't gonna do - I'm a hobbyist, not a f*ckin' rockstar ;)

I'm hoping this unit will allow me to KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid

I looked at the eclipse when pondering the Axe, I went with the axe because Of th lag time issues in preset loading on the Eclipse. I ended up with the axe that switches instantly and also has spillover (which i think the eclipse does, but its pointless if there is a LAG on the preset change).
I tested them both out and the fact that the axe had more options for around the same $ made it an easy choice.
.

Have to agree. Sad the Eclipse hasn't fixed this.

Fractal is coming out with an FX only Axe FX? Shit, that would be great.

What does Strymon have coming out in the multi-market?

It's in the works I was told. Who knows when. Shit, it took Fractal 2 1/2 years to make a footpedal.
