Phil Collen was...meh. I liked his tone, but his playing was about what I was expecting. A little inarticulate pentatonic dweedle dee circular shredding. Kind of reminded me of Schon's big solo style. I could almost have pulled this off.
Then Petrucci came out with his seven string. What an ungodly tight sound! One of the best live tones I've ever heard. And his playing was of course dead nutz. BUUUT...it sure looked like he wasn't plugged into the front inputs on either of his 2 JP2C heads. So what was he playing thru? I assume he has another preamp and he's using the JP2Cs for power amps. Does anybody know?
Satch was Satch. He's always been pretty consistent and his Marshalls sounded pretty good, but after Petrucci, it was kind of a letdown.

What was Petrucci playing thru?

I will try to find out next week when I see them...

The main cabinets and heads onstage are not on. They are there just to show people what I’m using because everything is mic’d in a corner at the back. Actually, sometimes we have MIDI controlling these heads as well, so you’d see the amps change channels even though they’re not being fed!

That should be your answer. He's got another JP2C and cabinet that's mic'ed offstage.

Yeah I just saw that article. I wonder if he's using any EQ in the AxeFx. His sound was so Tight/articulate/fluid etc...

Which pretty much describes the JP2C perfectly

John's got an Offstage Rig thats isolated

Also no EQ in the Axe FX its literally for FX only.

Satch is an extremely talented player, no doubt, and I try not to ascribe to the notion that playing guitar is some type of competition with winners and losers, but from some of the G3 clips I’ve seen, it kinda seems like poor Satch gets blown off the stage some times. I dunno, maybe that’s unfair.

I wondered why Phil was on that lineup and pretty much expected the same result.

Petrucci's tone is nuts. He puts the time in to make sure it is great and also that it comes across that way live.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's using the AFX2 for all or some of the tones......they would never tell.

Cliff has stated many times that certain artists they work with can never allow the public to know they use the AFX amp tones in studio & live because of signature amp deals. The AFX can be so easy to get shit really tight. That's why Misha Mansoor can't do without it for his tight as ass djent shit

Well, Petrucci is a damn God so Satch may look weak, but he’s miles better than Colon Blow...

Yeah, I wondered how Full Colon got that gig. I saw him at clinic with my brother a few years back, and we kinda looked at each other and said "this guy sucks?" WTF? I guess everyone else was busy and they got desperate? Should get somebody kinda unknown like Gary Hoey or something. Somebody up and coming, maybe? Michael Romeo, Jeff Loomis. Hell, EVH ain't busy!

I seriously doubt Petrucci would stray from his beloved Mesa Boogies. I know the AXFX fanboys wanna believe it, but I don't see it happening. It's been a mainstay in his tone for many years.

Agreed, PC is a good songwriter and is a great fit for DL but he's not the level of player to stand on his own in a show like that. He's a beginner level player compared to the guys normally picked for that tour. Sorry PC fans.

I saw G3 when they guys rolled through CT I started another thread and said pretty much the same thing. I like Def Leppard as much as the next guy and I've even owned 2 Jackson USA PC1's. But Phil Collen was painful to listen to compared to JP and Satch. The guitarist in Satch's band, Mike Keneally was better than Phil. PC's just not that caliber of player- not even close.

G3 is supposed to be about virtuoso players, or players close to virtuoso level. Phil Collen clearly isn't anywhere near there. Better choices would be Lynch, Impellitteri, Loomis, Broderick, Doug Rappaport, Gary Hoey, Mike Orlando, Tosin, EVH (though I doubt he's interested unless its a payday)

If they wanted a different vibe, get an acoustic guy, get roy rogers to play slide guitar and delta blues. They've gotten guys like Al DiMeola, Frank Gambale, Guthrie- and this year they chose Phil Collen????????? I don't get it???

Keneally can keep up with every guitarist that's on the current and past G3 tours....and throw in some piano/keyboard at the same time every now and then.

Remember when Steve Vai had Tony Macalpine in his touring band? Tony could easily headline a G3. Incredible virtuoso player. And somehow he wound up as Vai's other lead guitarist and their keyboardist. Go figure that one.

Orlando doesn’t belong anywhere in that group of players, all he does is set his hand to frappe and that’s it. I’ve seen him do it at acoustic gigs he played with a good friend of mine before he had an ounce of fame.
