Oh and don't forget a shit ton of plate reverb too

As much as I dig his tone there, I found the plate reverb distracting and wish that he'd just had barely enough to notice instead. Sounds like surf music through Marshalls when he does that! :aww:

I'm sure this has been discussed a lot, but what's up with the reversed neck pickup? Is this the "Peter Green" mod? I dig the sound of it.

No, *the* PG-mod is a neck-PU with a reversed magnet. Turning around an otherwise normal neck-PU gives a bit more clarity.

Hmmm,I must have had a bad Guvner than because I've never been able to get even remotely close to that tone :(

I think how well the Guvner works really depends on the amp - and I think it's safe to say the amp wasn't clean - probably breaknig up a little bit. I think going into a Marshally type amp that is stock should work pretty good. But I thought he used the Guvner with a JTM45 for Still Got the Blues and then a Tubescreamer or 2 with the Soldano - will have to do some checking.

You could have a point there; at the time I didn't have Marshally amps at all....

Luckily I was able to sell that box for a good price :)

From what I've found he used the crunch-channel with either the Guvnor (lead) or a TS (rhythm). HR50 for dirty and the SLO for cleaner tones. And here I was all proud of the SLO tones haha. I still think his Soldano tones are better than most of his Marshall tones though.

LOVE his playing. Def top 3 in terms of influences for me. What's the name of this tune?

Just watched the "Emerald Aisle Live" show/documentary. A friend loaned it to me. It's a digitized copy of a VHS tape. It was done in the early 80s, right about the time that "Out In the Fields" was released. Gary was playing some shows in Belfast and Dublin with his band. Played some stuff from "Corridors of Power" and "Victims of the Future". Highlights included "Shapes of things", "End of the World", and "Murder in the Skies". Wore a funny red "space suit", but man... he absolutely RIPPED it up. He was a serious SHRED machine when he wanted to be.
