Get EVH 2x12 Cab or put EVH speakers in my Marshall 4x12?

I currently have two Marshall 4x12 cabs that I use with my Axe-FX II/Matrix GT1000FX setup. One cab is all V30s and the other cab is all T75s. I have thought about downsizing a bit, especially since I just had hernia surgery a month ago and the less I have to lift, the better. :) I do like hearing my tone in stereo. It just adds something 3D in the room that I like. (I don't gig by the way).

I thought about picking up an EVH 2x12 Cab with Greenbacks to replace one of my Marshall cabs (probably the T75 one) so I have the mix of V30s on one side and G12s on the other for a great stereo tone. I even considered getting another type of cab (Mesa, etc.) in a 2x12 setup.

Would I be better off replacing two of the speakers in each of my cabs, rather than getting the EVH 2x12? I guess my question is about the difference in quality between a Marshall cab and an EVH cab. Has anyone noticed a difference in the low end and overall tone of an EVH cab compared to the Marshall cabs?

Like I mentioned before, I don't gig anymore so more than likely my 4x12s will just sit in my basement and I won't have to ever move them. After the hernia surgery though, I barely want to even pick up a pencil. :) I could replace just one 4x12 cab with the EVH and still have a great stereo sound.

Any help would be appreciated!

I have been giging with the 4x12 with multiple amps (Egnater Renegade, 5153, Mako Mak4, Mark III, 50 watt JMP) and all have sounded great with some knob tweaking. I sold my 1960a cab a while ago. I swapped speakers I the marshall, it just didn't do anything for me. The EVH 4x12 is tight, has punch, a little on the darker side but I really like it. I really don't think you'll be disappointed when getting the EVH 2x12 or 4x12.

Thanks for the reply man! Damn. On one hand, I'm glad to hear that. On the other hand, now I might have to try to talk the wife into letting me pickup an EVH cab. :) I went by a Sam Ash today and they had a Marshall 4x12 with Greenbacks and a Splawn 4x12 with Greenbacks. I think the Marshall had reissues and the Splawn might have actuallly been better ones.

This is exactly why I created a post for this. I know there is alot more to a cab than just swapping out speakers. I think Marshall cabs are great but compared to a few other companies (and depending on what speakers), the Marshall cabs don't seem as tight, etc. I like my Marshall with the V30s (it works good for the heavy stuff) so the Marshall with the T75 speakers would probably get replaced in this situation.

If you were gigging, I would say go with 2x12s. I played a gig last night and had to drag a 4x12 up and down some stairs; complete pain in the ass. I am seriously reconsidering my stance on 2x12 vs. 4x12...

Keep in mind....the EVH 2x12 has G12H Anniversaries, not the EVH/Heritage Greenbacks. They sound COMPLETELY different.

I didn't know that. Can you elaborate a bit more? Are the EVH/Heritage known as the "Blackbacks" and sold separately? I thought the EVH speakers were all the same. If you have more info that would be great and also which one is the better one.

i have the evh 2x12 and its a great cab for the evh 50 watt head. it wouldnt make alot of sense to buy it if you didnt have the matching head.

The EVH 4x12 has Celestion EVHs which are the same as the heritage G12M Greenbacks. The 2x12 has G12H30 70th Anniversaries.

Is one "better" than the other or are they just different in sound?

Apart from 5 watt power difference........the EVH Greenbacks have much less low end, more mids, and less highs. The G12H's have a big low end, scooped mids, and a very present high end (borderline harsh.....especially when new). The EVH's will have that signature Greenback "squish" while the G12H will be tighter and less forgiving. Thats my opinion anyway. The G12H are also MUCH louder.

Thanks! I was just looking at the Lynchbacks as well. Those look like a neat speaker that captures both vintage and modern tones.

I'm wondering if I do pickup two EVH or Lynchback speakers, should I do an X-pattern in my V30 cab and keep the T75 cab stock or do an X-pattern in the V30 cab and put the two removed V30 speakers in the T75 cab so that cab is also an X-pattern?

I got some G12M-65 Creambacks the other day. I had the heritage Greenbacks before and can't recommend the Creambacks enough. Get them!

I think I saw your post the other day about those. Was that you that posted about the Creambacks? I went to the website and checked those out and really do seem killer. So they are like a Greenback with more low end and warmer?

I'll throw this out again since I did in your other thread but consider a Splawn 212 with Small Blocks. G12M basically.

I've also owned an Avatar that had G12H30 and EyesoftheSouth explained it pretty well. I actually miss that cab now but the Splawn cab is so damn nice.

i have a 2x12 with Creambacks too with the 5150iii 100w head and they sound great, plus at 65w can handle the head fine.

4x12s are great if you don't have to lift them off the ground anywhere!

I saw two 4x12s this weekend at a local store. One was a Marshall with the Greenback Reissues and the other was a Splawn (can't remember what speakers). Sounds like the reissues are the Chinese?
