Getting rid of gloss/sticky finish on a neck?

I went to my local hardware store and got some finishing pads. One for stripping and one for finishing. Used the stripping pad to take off a small layer of the gloss on my neck and then used the finer finishing pad to smooth and even it all out. Rubbed some lemon oil on it after and now my neck feels like a million bucks.
 
I'd avoid the steel wool because it can make a mess but if you do use it have a nice magnet handy to clean up. I like to use 2000 grit sand paper for this sort of thing. I've never tried Scotchbrite.
