Title says it all. Will use it for an alt. rock band I'm starting up. Can hit it with boosts and such, but I want that Vox overdrive sound. Roll off on volume for cleans.

you should try to scrape up the money and buy an ac30. its worth it.

Yeah, I know. The issue is that this isn't my main focus. I need a high gainer for my metal band. I want this amp for the alt. rock stuff I do on the side.

Is this sound like(Mike Campbell ?) from Tom Petty's band gets- those type of tones where he gets some crunch on chords and leads but not too much- is that a Vox?

I think it is. He might use a dirt pedal to push the amp though. I love his sound, particularly in this live performance.

wampler (indy guitarist) cranked AC pedal
menatone top boost in a can
tech 21 liverpool pedal

all these pedals get a pretty good ac30 sounds through a decent clean channel. The peavey classic series plus these pedals is a killer on the cheap rig IMO. I have a ac30 myself but could def get away with this if I had to.

Thanks - I always read on Forums of the AC15 and 30 as a benchmark for tones of a certain type, but don't have the sound in my head.

He always has really good sounds for that specific style, makes me wonder if I could crunch extended chords a little bit without sounding too junky.

His chords often have a real nice warm crunch that sounds big but natural to me, perfect for the style.

The Menatone TBIAC is a great pedal. I used to have one of the earlier 6 knob versions. It's a killer pedal for that pushed AC30 sound. Only reason I sold it was because the Egnater VX module gets me all the Vox I could ever want. ;)

How cheap is cheap? You can find a MIC AC30cc for about $500 or so used. For a bit more you can probably find a Dr Z Carmen Ghia. A friend of mine says his Bugera V-22 cops the AC tones pretty good.

That's interesting..

Would a AC15 be a better call for me? Get the pushed Vox sound at lower volumes, roll back for my cleans?
