I had a chance and offered an extremely lowball price for a 1983 gibson les Paul custom. Reason why is because the guitar had been repainted something undesired, non original tuners or pickups, "potential" repair at neck joint and to some of the binding near that area. He wanted $1000.00, but I offered him $800 because it would have to be repainted imop. I want to try and post pics, if I don't, it's because I'm on an iPhone.

How does it sound and play? If good, I think you got a good deal.

I didn't buy it yet. It plays eh. Needs a little light work, but the worst part is the paint job. The front of the body looks ok, but there is an awful color on back and on headstock with a GIANT flying eyeball on back. It has to go. Sorry I didn't have more pics to show

Yeah 800 is a good price, just hope that if there was a headstock repair that it is a pro job and solid. I would probably have a pro refin it in either black or cream/white , sunburst or see through finish look funny with the 3 piece top.

The guy was not happy when I told him 800 and said he was gonna keep it. The headstock was fine, it was the neck joint that was questionable. The binding was repaired/replaced in a couple spots too. Is 1000 too much or a "fair" deal?

I don't know man.... I wouldn't piss with it personally.... not when Sam Ash has LP Traditional Satins for 1,149 new... Maybe not the same thing, but I wouldn't f with it.... That Traditional plays and sounds great.

Does he have original pickups or tuners or are they long gone. I have a white 84 and it came with shaw paf's and the foldout string winder tuners which are great. I love it so if you can get that 83 cheap and have it done in black for a few hundred and set up nice, you will have a cool old lp custom with good 1 pc mahogany body and a real ebony fingerboard for like 1300 to 1400 hundred all together and to me this would mop the floor with current production gibsons. Just be sure that the neck joint and fretts, trussrod, etc are solid so you a good foundation to start with.

Nope. Originals are gone. It is what it is. If it was all original I couldn't have bought it quick enough. $800 would make me take it. It would be a great player. I just can't swing it for a grand, shoot I could get a great ESP eclipse ll for less than a grand, I know those are huge quality. I will just always want the genuine article. Maybe he will give in another day.

you would pay more than that for a neck repair lp custom project without any hardware on ebay

can't see the second pic, but unless the neck is destroyed, $1000 is always a great deal on an '83 lp custom, or even a standard

the colour doesn't look bad at all

I bought a VOS with a broken neck for super cheap. Its my fave guitar to date... Plays like a dream.

Don't know if some of you can tell, it's also a 3 piece body. Kinda different I thought, even though everyone else says that is ok and doesn't matter. Heck one guy said his 1971 was a 5 piece.

If you never plan to sell it, maybe. Seems to have a long sad story of abuse. What else is near breaking?

After the market crashes and taxes jump way up, you will get much better deals on used gear.

The only thing I would even be concerned with is whether it was repaired or not. If it was never broken, nothing else matters. A solid '80s LPC is worth $$$$ these days. $1000 is chump changes especially if you only need to paint it. I saw a shit marauder for 1500. If it was broken and repaired, I would personally stay away, because that is me. Otherwise I would be all over it. Sure, if I could get it for $800...awesome, but $1000...absolutely. I've seen 80s LPC upwards of 3-4k already. That is stock and usually for anniv and custom colors, but '80s, so adjust accordingly.

Sounds like you could buy it for a grand and sell it on here for 1500   Seriously, I think thats a pretty good price, without seeing a few more pics sounds like a go to me.
