Was looking to pickup a nice VOS Gibson, I used to have a 57 VOS Les Paul, it was cool - thinking of looking at another one or the 58 VOS in Ice Tea...or the VOS SG. Anyone really just love theirs, had both and prefer one over the other? Tonally I'd imagine they're similar but different (both mahogany body/mahogany neck).

I love my SG but for VOS I'd go with a '58 or '59.
1 year # adds almost $2000  I get they 1959 hype, but the difference in price is nuts. Looking to be closer to $3k than 5k

For the prices they are asking, i would start looking for a real, old gibson. You are already in the same range. I would rather have a '60s or '70s sg or lp than a vos.

and the only difference is a flame top.

Flame top doesn't impress me all that much on a Les Paul, may also swap out whatever pickups to some Motor City's

The 57 I had was cool but I wanted more from it and instead of tinkering with swapping pickups I sold it like a fool.

Is there much difference in the 57,58,59 mech shapes?

Own a 2006 R0 VOS, I love it.. It's my fave. Nice neck, not a slim tapper but not as thick as a 59.

This. The early to mid 70s SGs are incredible playing and sounding.

I love the neck on my new LP Trad+. Anyone know which one of those would have the same neck carve out of the 57, 58, & 59?

Buy Both!! Someone had to say it!! I def prefer the thicker necks anymore (you might think diff) so I would suggest R7-R9 depending on budget. Do you like the VOS finish? I do like it on my 68CA (pre-vos) but it just seems fitting on that guitar.

I like the chunky necks on the LP's, the neck on the SG isn't nearly as beefy but still not a thin neck either. The 58 VOS LP is sure simple and understated and the ice tea burst is very Billy Gibbons-esque.

I like the fatter necks too. Check out the Traditional Pluses too....they have 50's necks and are great LP's when you find one. They are cheaper than the VOS too. If I was looking for that I'd go with a R9 but even then it doesnt mean its a keeper...doges in each price line.

I have an r7, r8, and r9 and love all three. Right now they all have the same stock burstbuckers in them although I am slowly building the courage to put some different pickups in (BKP, motor city, suhr, SD custom shop). If you liked the 57 neck, there's really no substitution unless maybe you look at a reissue for 1956 or prior year. The necks going forward in year just get thinner and the tops generally get more figured (aka pricier). On a rare occasion you can find a plain top 59 or 60 at musiczoo or wildwood (I believe thy have a wildwood spec plain top 1960 reissue right now) that you could maybe talk them down to 3k on. Worth checking out for sure. Oh and I hate the SG shape so my vote is definitely LP!

A vintage old SG. not too expensive if it isn't a case queen. I have a 76 SG Deluxe that is a great player. Got it disgustingly cheap.

I thought the 59' was supposedly the chunkier of the 3 (57,58,59)?
So the 58 will be thinner than the 57...interesting. May need to try to find all 3 in a shop to put my hands on and compare. On another note I had a PRS McCarty with a wide-fat that felt hefty. The McCarty 58 may come into the mix :D

I promise they get slimmer as the years go up, tons of threads on this if you just google r7 vs r8 vs r9. I can't tell you how much time I spent searching the web to justify getting all three (just gave in to gas in the end   ), not that difference in neck size is a reason to get all three.

the first time i played the r7, my wrist actually hurt for a little bit because i had never played a neck that fat. My wrist has finally gotten used to it and I love the big neck. I don't know where you are in texas but im sure there are some good dealers around that would have all three.

I've never liked PRS that much so no gas there :D
