Greetings :)
I'm no pedal expert so I'm looking for recommendations. The rig I'm building has an Eleven Rack, but I can also switch the 11R out of the mix and use a pre amp with pedals into the Mesa 2:90. What pedals would you recommend as mandatory for a typical cover band (mostly classic rock, but anything from Keith Urban to Candlebox)?

I'm not looking for boutique stuff; if there's an $80 OD that gets me 90% of the tone of a $300 pedal, let's go with the cheaper one. I'm also looking for a modest setup - no more than I can squeeze on a sliding rack shelf. Right now I have (but don't necessarily need to use):

Ibanez TS-9
Digitech Bad Monkey
Compressor / Sustainer
(Old, 80's, orange housing, can't remember the brand)

Thanks in advance...

If it has a single knob and switch, then it's probably an Orange Squeezer and it's a piece of shit so you should give it to me.

you'll be getting a million different answers on this one because everyone has there own take on what pedals would be a must.

So I would answer this as what pedal would ALWAYS be in my rig:

1. (believe or or not) a BBE Sonic Stomp (I use it to quickly dial in the bass response of the different cabs/venues)
2. An overdrive pedal as a booster. Mine are a Maxon OD9 (rhythm) and BB preamp (leads)
3. Boss TU-2 (I know this doesn't count)

Anything else would just be to fill in the gap for what effects you don't like in the Eleven.

No, it's a DOD - maybe an FX80? It's been tucked away in a closet forever and hasn't been used because I had rack gear.

You're right - I wasn't sure how to ask the question so that I could avoid a million different answers and yet keep the post from being too wordy (I've been accused of that :D ). You're approach may be best. What pedal "functions" are mandatory (and which pedal is recommended) to cover 95% of the stuff that a typical cover band would play (e.g., boost, OD, Flanger, Phaser, etc.).

I should have mentioned this, but I have a Midiverb III that will cover the reverb, delay and chorus spectrum, as well as a rack EQ and tuner.

Thanks again...

Anyone? Just looking for recommendations on a good core set of pedals that would help round out tones needed for a typical cover band scenario...

Thanks

If that's the case, I'd just get a phaser and call it done. You can try finding a cheap flanger if you want, but aside from that, you got most stuff covered.

Boss Chorus and Compressor, TS9, RC Booster or BB Preamp. Buy 'em used.

Here are the pedals I would go with:

Barber Dirty Bomb
Bodenhamer Bloody Murder (or other good screamer type)
Dano Cool Cat Chorus
Boss DD-20
Turbo Tuner
Boss BF-2 flanger

You've got to have an 808 style pedal. Period. I've used so many pedals trying to get a certain sound from my rig and I've modded a few to get them to sound better. In the end I end up wasting my time because in side by side comparison, nothing stands up to that bare 808 in front of amp sound. To me anyway. Today actually I've found that you can get a really warm vintage tone by cranking the gain knob, rolling back the tone knob and compensating by upping the treble on the amp. VERY Led Zeppelin/Cream like, the kind of tone where it's like all mids. And sounds fat as hell to boot.

They'll bury me with this pedal :D

I've heard the OCD is pretty good too

i can't live without a noise gate. but i like a silent rig that doesn't hiss at me like an ex-wife.

isp decimator.

Phase 90 and a wa.

I've found that I am using my Phase 90 much more now that I've modded it. Could be considered a 'must-have' in its modded form, or just get the script version. (I wonder how similar my modded pedal is to the script version??)

The script are smoother sounding ..... I would be fine with any of them, any descent phase is fine. I use a Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe most of the time. I hear the Voodoo Lab wa is pretty amazing. I have been using a Cry Baby 535 for years. ..... but any decent wa well do.

These few pedals and a decent amp well do pretty much everything I need to do.

Thanks everyone...

I'll read through the responses, summarize the recommendations and get out the check book. I ordered a slide-out tray for the rack yesterday and I'm hoping it will be here by Friday. I'll need to start filling it up :D

I have some questions about powering the pedals, but I'll do that in a separate post...
Thanks again

I'm not surprised there aren't any fuzz recommendations, being that we are in an 80's forum.      But, a Big Muff Pi of some kind is a must. I thought there would be more delays recommended too.

Anyway,

This1isMyne mini buffer - best $40 you'll ever spend. beat the Fryette valvulator off of my board
Ernie Ball VP Jr. 25K volume pedal - I say 25K because I use a buffer to get low Impedance, and the 25K doesn't cut the highs like the 250K volume pedal.
MXR Distortion III - what I use for OD, smooth boosting, stacking, light distortion, etc.
Barber Dirty Bomb - what I use for heavier distortion and leads
Stomp Under Foot Civil War Muff - what I use for all of my fuzz needs from 90's alt rock to Gilmour leads.
Boss RV-3 Reverb/Delay- Tonally, Boss hasn't topped this one for reverb OR delay.
Digitech Chorus Factory - GREAT chorus. heavy duty. versatile. cheap.
Sonic Research Turbo Tuner - This changed my life.
