Going old school tonight

Another casino gig tonight...this time in Newport, RI. I had been running an AX8 direct, then started using my 5153 50 watter with the AX8 for FX and switching. Tonight, I'm going almost bare bones...wireless, tuner, talkbox, noise suppressor and reverb. I haven't played a show of any kind in years with a setup like this but it's time. Depending on how tonight goes, I may just keep my live rig like this. Plugging straight into the amp just gives it a little more meat and edge to my ears. It'll be weird not having certain FX like phaser, flanger, octave, etc....but I may be able to concentrate more on playing and singing.

Another reason I started using my amp is because I built my own in ear monitoring system and I prefer a mic'd cab to the direct signal from the AX8 or amplifire. Something about feeling and hearing that air/space between the speaker and mic....I wasn't getting that going direct no matter how many IRs I tried. In my rack case I have a power conditioner, Behringer XR16, my sennheiser in ear system and a behringer mic splitter. I can control my guitar in stereo, my vocal, my talkbox and my acoustic. I have FOH feed me the rest of the band and can control the volume of that. I'm also looking at one of the plexi baffles because I'm tired of venues saying amps are too loud. The damn thing needs to be loud to sound good!

I have my eye on a BE-100 if this experiment proves to me that I can get by like this. You may see a bunch of stuff up for sale!

Nice! I played my 5150II with only a tuner and a short delay for the solos for years. For me nothing beats the guitar direct to the amp and amp to a cab. Though have been experimenting with the two notes torpedo live as mic replacement and I really like it especially because there is no mic bleed.

If my daughter wasn't sick I'd go to Newport. I'd like to hear someone besides me play a 5150 III and you've got some interesting things happening with that set up. Plus I could use a night out. But I'd have to bring the wife so getting a babysitter isn't happening.

Every time I've played an AXE FX, its when a buddy is on his set break and I play through his rig for a minute. And I know I couldn't deal with the lack of air moving next to me from a cab. I've played that way now for almost 30 yrs, just too weird to not have that. Gotta have the amp/cab next to me.

Great news Rich! Took me a few years to realize this as well. I tried but for me, I just know what I like and it works. I have been really enjoying my setup now for the past year.
