rent a car and save yourself the hassle, Being a white boy from Merry Old England, you take public transportation in LA and get off in the wrong place you are done for... ;)

really? is it that rought in LA?

I guess being my first time there I wanna see the usual, Santa Monica, Downtown LA, maybe Hollywood hills, yadda yadda, basically what you see on t.v. and hear about on magazines and word of mouth.

do you think a whole day would be sufficient? I wouldn't want to keep the car for more than a day, plus I gotta be back to Anaheim to sleep at my hotel.

I was there in August. I rented a car, it's too big to take public transport. Driving on the right side of the road was suprisingly easy to addapt to. One day would not be enough for me, too much to see, but you COULD drive a loop in one day.

I think "done for" might have been a little overboard, but there are tons of places in LA that I would not want to be at any time of the day or night. I think Steve has got some rose-colored glasses. The guy's so optimistic when we were having a beer at NAMM last year, he had one swig left and he turned to me and said, "my glass is 1/12th full".

how's the parking thing.........is it hard to find parking? is the parking expensive?

I just don't wanna rent a car, go drive around to find I cannot leave the car and go take a few snap shots because there's no parking OR because it's like NYC, where you pay 25 + for 30 min

#1 Yes, Rent a car
#2 Plenty of parking in LA, it's not a centralized city like New York...it's like one giant suburb with a bunch of cool areas
#3 Besides typical Hollywood site-seeing ('ya gotta do that your first time), stop by Tone Merchants and Squid Music!!!
#4 Touristy, but Venice beach is always fun to see one time. Griffith Park Observatory is really cool too.

Have fun!

you may have to pay parking certain places.
however, unless you like your hotel room, you have to rent a car.

Manhattan Beach is the nicest thing to see near LA. The city itself is like driving through a third world metropolis.
Much more to see and do and enjoy along the coast going south from Long Beach.
I'm not going this year due to my Dad's illness, but last year I stayed at Laguna Beach and had a blast.

Ok, im searching for a hotel near the convention center, i fiund a few, can i book anything in anaheim ? Should i search withing a particular neighborhood or place?

I found a cheap resort called howard johnson inn & suites in Orange.

I dont wanna book a place that'll cost me a fortune to get to the convention center

Definitely rent a car when you are in LA. Parking is usually free or inexpensive. The bigger issue is that the spots are small so I suggest renting a 4-door sedan or smaller.

All the nice spots you mentioned are on the west side so its not a dangerous/rough area.

As mentioned above, Manhattan Beach is about as nice as it gets in the LA area (or thereabouts). Pacific Palisades and Malibu are really nice too. Also, you should definitely go to Santa Monica (the new mall is nice and walking along Ocean Blvd. is always good - just don't step on anyone sleeping on the ground haha).

There are plenty of guitar shops on Sunset Blvd. There are a few other shops around as well, but I mention Sunset since there are multiple stores on the same block.

Orange is a little bit aways from LA so you'll have to drive for a while. If you are primarily going to be in Anaheim, you may consider driving to Newport Beach. I really like that area.

Anyways, if you're going to be on the west side and need restaurant recommendations let me know.
