Hi All,

I just picked up an amazing new Fortin Cali and want to have the entire amp overhauled. Essentially have someone go through it, add new tubes, change out a wonky (sp?) pot, and check the bias. Aside from Dave's Sound in Whippany, I'm not really sure of any other well regarded amp techs. I would, of course, appreciate any guidance you all have.

Thanks!

Paul

One of the best techs in NJ is also one of the best builders: Jimmy Somma at Sommatone (Gladstone NJ)

Dave's Sound is great but I know Dave is away until Thursday and quite backed up.

SG Custom Sound in Douglaston, NY is real good. Authorized Mesa repair too.

Yeah- I've been using Dave for my amps and Bill there for my guitars for years. Great guys that do awesome work.

I had Dave work on an amp of mine but I won't go to him anymore, I have my reason's. I had good dealings with Sommatone and Triple S in Bloomfield. You could also give Fuchs a call as he will take look at what you have depending on how busy he is.

I brought my Bogner to Jimmy at Sommatone. The amp was ready when he said it would be and all issues were resolved with it...

I've used both Dave and Andy to service my amps.

I recently brought an amp to Dave for repair. He did good work. He does tend to usually have a back log of work. If it is something that needs to be completed under a tight deadline, you might want to keep that in mind.

I would highly recommend Andy Fuchs as well. His shop is right over in Clifton. He did a repair and mod for one of my amps a few years back. He's a good guy.

Yeah, I went to Andy with a quick issue a few months ago. Great guy and super easy to deal with. I'd absolutely go to him again but understand that he is absolutely swamped with other stuff.

I know it's not exactly in the area, but George Alessandro does repairs out of D Town Guitars in Doylestown, PA. Not too far from NJ.

Paul,
Email me a front and back picture of the amp....I'll be able to tell you what I did change out. I don't normally leave on wonky pots:-)
Also your zip code, I can recommend you some fully grown males.
Cheers,
Mike at fortinamps dot com

Thanks Mike.

I want to be clear that I, in no way, thought that anything was wrong with the amp due to the mod or the seller. Given that the amp is nearly 20 years old, I figured that something could have gotten jostled during shipping.

No worries:-) Just so you know that I normally get caught up it each mod and end up doing way more than I should. It's my techie nature....bench warrior for over 17 years in the Music Industry alone....will do that to you. I hate stuff that breaks. I even address the wires and components that would get "jostled" in shipping/touring.

Cheers,
Mike

Dave is good but can take a long time. Not sure how up he is on current or modded stuff. He had never heard of the Mesa Stiletto that I brought him(and he is a Mesa authorized repair center) and said he never heard of Splawn. He's good with the old stuff though.

Be careful when taking modded amps in for work. Be sure to tell them that you in no way want anything changed circuit wise. I had a tech "improve" an old modded Marshall by lowering the gain to quiet it down. Alls he was supposed to do was replace some jacks and tubes. Amp never sounded as good as it did before going in.

OMG +1 to this. Lost an ungooped cameron mod because once is never enough to tell someone not to muck with something they don't get, and not every amp tech understands mods. I'd highly heed Mike's recommendations on this one.

Hey, Wonky Pots....        You better send the tech a schematic too. Most won't be able to find their way around a Cali mod.....
