I have a buddy thats looking for a pedal for Metal tones. Overall a tight sound with tight lows for sure, no screeching highs just mean and aggressive. He's tried a few wampler pedals to give you an idea of what isn't working for him. He's using a Carvin X60B and he's been ordering thru proguitarshop.com so he can return what he doesn't like. But it doesn't have to be from there, suggestions welcome.

What about that new series of stomps from Bogner HQ? I'd check out the Uber pedal:

Have him check out the Amptweaker Tightmetal or Tightrock pedals. I'm pretty sure you can return it if you don't like it.

Barber Dirty Bomb is pretty good.
Subdecay Blackstar is too.

Was already said, but here's another vote for James Brown's Tight-Metal pedal. I mean, c'mon, the dude created the 5150 circuit so it has to slay.

What's the price range like?

This might be just me, but I've had some surprising results with some surprisingly cheap/shitty pedals, depending on what you're running it in to...

For example: I bought a used Metal Muff from Guitar Center for about, 60$ just as some pocket distortion to bring to school (Keep in mind that the standard amps at my school are Fender Devilles.. not the most metal amp in the world..). I tried the Metal Muff through my Axe Fx just to get a point of reference and it sounds like the steaming-est piece of shit I've ever heard, same with through my little Line 6 combo. That said, when I brought it to school and plugged it into that Fender, it sounded absolutely AWESOME and got me every metal tone I wanted (along with a bunch that I had no desire for, but I'm sure somebody would've liked somewhere lolol).

I've had similar experiences with a Boss Metalcore (also pretty inexpensive), but it ended up coming through sounding much less tubey than the Muff. Also has less knobs / tweakability (and no Top Boost, if you're into that kind of thing).

I'm not sure how much you should trust my opinion though considering I usually try to stay away from pedals hahahah. Also, I dont know what kind of other gear your friend has, and I've never played through a Carvin X60B.. the pedals I mentioned might sound like shit through his rig, I know they're definitely capable of not sounding great lol.

Just my 2¢, hope your friend finds something he likes

Amptweaker stuff looks pretty rad! Thanks y'all, I'm gonna send him that way.

I was excited to hear about the AmpTweaker Tight Metal but so far I've never been impressed with any of the clips. You could also look at the AMT Legend series... I think they recently put out the second version of that line. I have a S1 and P1 that sound killer, based on Soldano and 5150. They are supposed to be preamps, not distortion pedals though. The Amp Tweaker is the same way but I think people generally think it sounds best before an amp, not as a preamp, even though that's how it's meant to be used.

I aimed him toward the AMT legend 2 series also. Hopefully he will get both so I can try them out oo

Go to tonefinder.com I think Killzone has some gnarly clips of the P1... good website to check out pedals/amps blah blah.

The amptweaker tightmetal is an awesome pedal for when you aint got the gain in a amp. Works awesome in a solid state or tube amp.

+1 on the Dirty bomb.

That said, if Metal is the main focus consider changing the amp to one that will not need a pedal. As the gain goes up, I find less and less pedals I like.

I agree but it's what he's got. Budget player. He's actually the drummer in my band
