Rane is pretty decent as well. Depending on what you need an MXR pedal works too.

the MXR 10 band is good. I know it isn't rack mount but I have been impressed with it touching up the eq in the FX loop for dirty sounds. Doesnt have as much of an impact on clean tones it seems.....

the rack mounted 20 and 30 band EQ's are overkill for guitar use i believe. the 10 band MXR is what i would recommend, as it has the 10 most common frequency adjustments for guitar and guitar cabinets.

30 band EQ's are excellent but really arent needed unless you are fine tuning for production use in studio or for a PA system in house. still though, most people run 57's into boards from their cabinets for recording. so the 10 band will work excellent.

TC 1128 midi graphic eq (What I use, totally transparent)
TC 1140 Parametric (What I did use, but I needed midi)
Rane MPE-14 (This is the ADA MQ-1 rehoused, midi controlled)
Rane MPE-28 (mono version of above with twice as many freq bands, midi controlled)
Furman PQ-3 (Dimebag, fx loop, CFH, TGSTK)
Furman PQ-4 (Dimebag, fx loop, VDOP, FBD)

IMO 20-30 bands EQ are more for room EQ (like the whole final mix ) For guitar i'd get something Parametric, so you can nail THAT weird-mid frequency you want

fixed.

I know you're a Dime expert, but I thought he used the frowning MXR eq in front

yeah, with the Furman scooping the either in front of or behind the MXR depending on what he was after. the only thing he kept in the loop was the doubler. :D

Musical band-aids IMO (with the exception of parametrics in certain applications)...if your rig has good tone, external EQs should be unneccessary. What are you trying to accomplish with it?

+1

But these are hard to find, when they come up, they go quickly; at least they did when I was looking. I had one and someone in the Netherlands purchased it.

Great thing is the MIDI, you can define different curves and reuse them easily. I could have a single preset in my ADA MP-1 and I could use different MQ1 presets, and get great tonal variety. MQ1 sounds great too.

If you are using an eq to fix bad tone then yes it is a band aid. (Why I always thought BBE was unnecessary) But if you are using it as an effect, or boost, or to get a different flavor for a channel without touching your amp controls, then they can be very useful.

What are you planning on using it in the loop or in the front?

In the loop I think the Furman PQ-3 or the TC 1140 is great. Assuming you're going to be using it with a distorted amp I'd lean towards the TC if it's going in the front. The Furman can get kind of noisy in front of a distorted amp if you're not careful. The TC is much easier to get setup in front of without alot of extra noise.

I think that a good EQ in the loop is awesome. If you find an amp that has a great overall sound, but you wish that it was a bit brighter, darker, etc, but you find that you loose the character of the distortion when you get the tone you like you can play with both EQs to have a lot of controll over the final sound. It won't make up for a crap amp, but it can make a great amp a whole world of awesome.

I have a Rane PE15 being delivered tomorrow (if UPS is on time) That is going to replace my MXR 10 band. I will post my opinion once I have it.

Another use I have found for an EQ in the loop is as an attenuator so that you can have the controlls on the amp turned up lounder, and attenuate it with the EQ, and that will let you have more controll over the levels when playing at bedroom levels.
