Hey there guys. So I picked up a book on guitar repair for doing my own setups, adjustments and what not and I feel like I've gotten pretty proficient at it. The next step is that I want to learn how to solder so I can make my own cables and even do power cables like the 1-spot for my pedalboards & also swap out pickups.

Anyone have any resources they've used? I'm a total newb to this so be gentle...

Reading articles can only get you so far, but a video tutorial is what helped me the most so I can SEE how to do it correctly. Do a quick search on YouTube and you'll find plenty of soldering videos, especially for guitar pickups. Excellent resource.

Trial and error. Get a nice soldering iron; that's some of the best money I've spent. The best soldering advice I can give is to use enough solder and make sure you give the joint enough time to properly heat. Not that you need a pool of solder, but a good amount around each joint. Giving it enough time to heat will ensure it doesn't break later.

WELLER WELLER WELLER They are pricey for a soldering iron, but are worth it TRUST ME!! Don't go to radio shack and buy one of those shitty cheap ones. You will get so frustrated you'll want to go outside and destroy the guitar your're working on!! Also get some flux, it's okay to buy that at radio shack!! :-)

Yep. My Weller WP35 goes everywhere with me. :) Every once in a while when I leave my Weller at work and need to do some soldering at home do I use my Radio Shack irons. Most of the time I just wait, to save the frustration.

Picked up a Weller WTCPT the other day, OMG what a difference that thing has made for me......threw my old Rat Shack rig in the trash.
