Got a Mesa Mark IVb

Nothing really new or too enlightening here, but I'll share any way.

I have had an interest in these amps for years, but I was always a bit put off by the consensus that they are difficult to dial in. I have also been addicted to Marshall based sounds for quite a while and everything else always fell short so I just wasn't sure it would fit me.
I decided to go for it and was searching for either a Mark III head or Mark IV. This IVb came up in my CL from a neighboring city and when I reached out the seller was willing to meet half way. Good dude, nice easy transaction.

The amp is super clean. It has the IVb FX loop configuration, but a fixed power chord and no reverb switch on the FS (who knows if that is original though). SN is high 8000s, which from some research puts it mid to late 90s I believe.

I only have my Splawn 4x12 w/SBs home to run it through right now. Had 2 evenings this week where I was able to crank it up and see what it can do. Straight in...don't have my pedal board at home at the moment.

First observation, I am really glad I read the manual and read through a bunch of threads on how to approach these amps. So many different controls that drastically impact the tone and feel. Having that base knowledge it didn't take me long to get it sounding pretty good.

The Lead channel sounds great! Different than the Marshall based amps I have been favoring, but still has a mean growl and grind that I look for. It is brighter than I expected and that may be what I am toying with the most. There are a lot of ways to influence the high end and it seems to be a fine line of maintaining the sizzle and cutting edge, but not getting too bright and harsh. That concerns me a bit as I look to move to the Bogner V30 cab as the Splawn is naturally a little darker.

R2 is a big surprise to me so far. It sounds really good and has enough gain for rhythm on a lot of the stuff my band covers. I could see the potential of riding that channel for rhythm and then using the lead channel with the volume jacked up a bit strictly for solos. I probably will not do that though as I intend to try a boost in the loop and have the ability to use either channel for rhythm on a given song with the ability to kick in a volume boost only. I can't wait to try kicking R2 with my Cusack Screamer and getting the volume boost working.

R1 is a really nice clean. I do not play clean much at all, but its nice to know this amp has it available. I don't really see an issue with the shared parts of the EQ between R1 and R2. Maybe the bass control, but even running it at 5 to give R1 some beef didn't mud up R2...perhaps because I had the R2 treble pegged? Separate gain, treble and presence along with the pull fat switches allows R1/R2 enough separate control to get each where I want them.

You can really change up the tone and feel of these things and I can see why they can sound great being used for so many different genres. For me Full Power, Pentode, Simul Class, Mid Gain with EQ always on has been where its at so far. Glad I took the plunge! I will likely take it to my gig next Saturday. I can quickly and easily go back to the Helios should I not like how it is sounding on the Bogner cab in a different venue.

Great amp. Congrats! Your settings look pretty close to mine. Lead channel, everything around 7, with bass on 1 or 2 and adjust presence to fine tune the highs. I flip the switch to mid gain and bump the gain and drive up for more saturation.I run my GEQ the same way too.
I have a Splawn cab with S/B too. It actually sounds better through my Mesa cab with V30's so I wouldn't worry about using the Bogner cab, the amps seems to like v30.

Man...these threads always make me miss mine!

Mine was set up with 2 - 6L6s, and 2 EL34s. I really liked that combination. Lots of tonal variation.

Congrats - HNAD!!

I am still playing around a bit with the Mid Gain vs Harmonics. Harmonics is a little more open and raw, but its a small difference. Sometimes that extra saturation of the Mid Gain is nice, but it does get out of control easily.

Congrats!! Yep, knowing how to approach the controls saves a load of time. I started about where yours is set and then it's just fine tuning from there depending on the cab being used.

One thing I do that I haven't heard of others doing - I set RH2 as a second clean channel with just a hair of breakup as a platform for some fuzz and dirt pedals. The way that channel takes a Bogner Red and Carl Martin Plexitone.. just crazy good. It sounds and feels like an extension of the amp. Basically adds a "crunch" channel that I prefer to the RH2 sound gained up on its own, although I've gotten some good tones running the gain high on that channel too.

Congrats. I love mine.

Take your time with it though. It's not plug and play. There are so many tones in there it's amazing.

It can be too bright with a turn of a knob and then too bassy with a turn of a knob. A little too much on that middle slider and it's too middy. It's definitely a professional instrument and you need to take time with it. Once you do the results are stunning.

I started recording guide tracks the other night with mine and the engineer started getting excited immediately. Couldn't believe how tight and huge the tone was. Very nice razor sharp edge on the highs. Lows, while not Rectifier huge, are so tight and snarly. The tone sits in a mix with loud bass and drums so nice. The guitar sits where it should.

You can probably tell I love this thing. Still figuring it out but it's going to be around for the long haul.

You bastards...this thread is giving me GAS. Maybe it's the beer.

isnt that a mark iv A?
The only real way to tell is by the back panel. The A & B versions have different FX loop layouts.

I believe that's the short head (rackmountable). I have the widebody and it has the EQ switch and Mid Gain switch on the front panel. Those are around back on the short head.

It has the rev B FX loop with one send and two returns.
I realized today that I was misunderstanding the reverb switch difference. I had it in my head that the footswitch for the B had a Reverb in/off switch, which is not the case. FU3 is the same for both, but the B has a jack in the back to allow some other external switch to control it.

HNAD! I love my MKIVb. I don't think you have anything to worry about with a Bogner cab and V30s. I'm not a big fan of my this amp through my GB (similar to SBs) loaded Marshall cab. I run a clean boost in the loop of all my amps for an extra volume boost for solos and it sounds great through the MKIV. Enjoy!

I've been using an Axe FX for so long now, but the Mark IV was always one of my top amps when I was playing tubes - enjoy it!

I found myself playing Latin Jazz & Funk on my IV with bass and drums a few weeks ago. Amazing how versatile the amp can be.

Often I have the GEQ always on RHY2. I like the GEQ off for RHY. I use the GEQ on the LEAD channel. But really like it off for a lot of lead playing with a band.

Which clean boost do you use? Was thinking about getting a modified GE7. May only use the level boost on it, but at some point the EQ could be useful. Seems like a good tool to have.

Congrats! ive had mine iv-b for a long time.its a keeper.I got the ultra rare simul stereo head that goes with the iv.lots of nice tones in the iv.
