Sounds phenomenal, but I only have 2 gripes, (one somewhat valid, the other my own OCD).

There's many killer tones, but I really don't find anything of my liking in 70's mode. It seems the least aggressive of the 3, and even with a boost, I don't care for it.

As odd as it seems, 60's mode gets pretty angry, which you'd think would be the lower gain mode. Not so. And, to my ears, can get just a tad more percussive than modern. Crazy as it sounds, I tend to flip between that and modern, which is where my OCD kicks in. As glorious as these two modes can sound, I can't stop flipping back and forth! Which was one reason I sold the Heliod. I actually preferred 70's mode on that amp, but 80's was damn good too.

*IF* I could have my way, I would just want an amp with one of those channels in a simple, single channel amp package. Which, is why I wanted another Competition. 1st and 2nd gears foot switchable, set it and forget it, and no 3-way switches, (x2), to be playing with. I love the Yeti, but spend more time flipping switches than playing!

I've been following this because I think we have similar tastes but whatcha gonna do?

Keep or kick?

Keep, until a Competion shows up for sale! This amp DOES sound good, that's for sure!

Why a competition over a Pro Stock? :D

If you want a killer one channel modded Marshall tone don't forget to check out a Henning Bottle Rocket. I love mine!

I'll look into the differences, and check it out.

Big price difference!

The amp is capable of high gain in "60s" mode, so the name of that mode probably isn't ideal.

There's more gain on tap in 60's than 70's. Massive gain, for sure.

Your assessment of the modes sounds off. There's no 70s mode on Yetis. The era switch positions are middle=60s, right=80s, and left=modern. The 80s mode has way more gain and compression than 70s mode because it kicks in the clipping diodes, so you're either confusing the mode names or your amp isn't working right.

^^^^ agreed

Seems like you're confusing the switch settings. In the center = no diodes = stock 800 sort of. To the right = 20v diodes = '80s mode. To the left = 9.1v diodes = modern mode.

There are no "channels." You're already dealing with a single channel amp. The only difference between all three modes are the clamping voltage of the diodes. Change the diodes to taste. It's really that simple. Try 16v or 18v diodes. 9.1v is a little too low for my taste. And 20v is a little too high. I like somewhere in the middle which would be 16v.

If you want something similar with fewer switches to mess with, you could take an amp like the Chupa or Yeti and hardwire the bright switch on Gain 2. Remove it from Gain 1. Hardwire the feel control to be always on. Then remove the era switch and just hardwire the diodes. Guess what amp you'd end up with...

So, try this:

Get two 16v 1N4745A zener diodes from Mouser. 30 cents each.
https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Vi ... w21Yuf4%3d

Wire them up so the bands are facing each other. Then attach one end to the master volume pot, lug 3. The other end to lug 1 (ground). Keep the Era switch in the center. See how that sounds. It will about halfway between the left/right setting of the Era switch. Some people will charge you $100 for this "mod". I just gave it to you for free. All you have to do is spend a dollar or two for the diodes + shipping.

Note: with it wired up like this, the '80s mode won't work anymore. This is just to test it out to see how you like it.

That makes more sense. Left and right are both aggressive, middle is by far the least. I just assumed it went eras, from left to right, keep thinking of the Helios I had.

It works just fine. Sounds fantastic. I pretty much live in 80's, right position. High gain Marshall heaven.
