Hey Guys..

I love my Charvel big time and I'm considering putting a new trem on it. It has a good Schaller but it's getting old and the fine tuners are hard to turn, etc,. I'm wondering if anyone knows if the Gotoh would drop right in?
I don't want a bunch of work. I mean, I want to use the original post holes, etc, and don't want to do any drilling or plugging holes, etc,. We don't have a tech close by where I live so I can order online and get the trem dropped off at my house, but can't repair the body as above and get it to work, so it needs to work right out of the box.. They are cheaper too than an ORF and I understand the OFR is too long with the screws used to tighten down the blocks onto the strings. They are longer and therefore will bump into the body when doing pullups, etc,.

Thanks in advance.. You guys rock!

Yup, will drop right in! Just make sure to get the right sized block for the Gotoh, depending on what size your current Floyd block is.

Depending on your current Schaller, maybe it pays to take it apart and clean/oil it - to get it back in shape? I think the older Schaller's are better than the Gotoh.

I agree with Andy. What year is the guitar? Those older Schallers are great bridges!!!

It's about a 88 or 89 or around there. It's a Charvel Firecrackle 3DR I think it's called. I looked it up on a site that has a bunch of information about Japanese Charvels and Jacksons and it is about this time frame. It came with the Schaller Floyd and I love it!
Is there a good site on taking care or maintenance?

Thanks guys..

Forget the Gotoh and buy a new chair already!

Hey now. :uzi:

That's a killer chair believe it or not. It's old, but it's so comfortable! :D

I thought those '88 crackle finish guitars came with Jackson Floyd's?

No, some came with Schaller! I don't remember what year, but I knew the guy that bought this new! He got it in I think around 89, 90, or 91, so it's one of those years or one year before, according to the year he bought it, etc,.
Stays in tune great.
I took you folks advice and I took the trem apart and cleaned it and put some lock cleaner / graphite spray on it, and it's working great. Still stays in tune perfect. You can whammy all the way to the body almost and pull up almost to the point of breaking a string and do it all day long, and as long as you don't break a string it stays in tune. I'm using Elixers Polywebs now too and love those strings. More expensive, but great strings.
Thanks

Cool, a little Floyd restoration and you save some cash and keep the guitar stock!

Yeah, works great. I read an article about it, and the article says it's not as good as the original because it uses zinc cast metal on some parts and they strip, and the knife edges are inserts and hardened, but on the OFR the whole baseplate is hardened, but I've had several people tell me that they love the Schaller! This is my favorite playing guitar. I don't like the finish all that well, but that's not anything to do with the sound or ease of playing, etc,. This neck on this thing just rocks.. and it just stays in tune and the frets are perfect, etc,.. I thought my Ibanez was hard to beat, but I think this has a better action over all and is easier to play yet. Not much, but a tad bit, but that may be in my mind as I like the layout of the pickups, etc,..

Anyway, thanks guys for the suggestions!
