Greenbacks in Mesa OS 4x12?

Picked up a quad of '95 G12M speakers (out of a batshit crazy Hughes & Kettner cab; super weird construction).

Anyway: looking for a home for them. Anyone try the G12M in a Mesa oversized 4x12? The stock cabs sound great with a Recto or 5150 but man I hate them with my 2204. Wondering if the G12M can make it work better with the 2204.

I haven't tried Greenbacks in a Mesa cab, but I'm curious which H&K cab you found to have weird construction. Did it look like this?

I've done it. Not worth it. Mesa OS thrives on chunky sounding speakers with a healthy bass response. It made the GB's sound quieter than normal when I did it. It seemed to attenuate them quite a few dB. Had to turn up the master volume a little more than normal to sound right. Didn't sound terrible but didn't roar like they normally do.

Yup. It was like that. There's no back panel to remove (sealed completely shut), but the speakers were REAR loaded.

I had to remove the damn baffle to get to the speakers. It also seems a bit undersized but super heavy. It's all ply but the ply seems thicker than what I'd expect.

Was not my favorite sounding cab. I have a '93 1960a with the same speakers that is just awesome. I'm hoping these speakers are fine and it's just the H&K cab that I didn't like.

Yeah a traditional Marshall with a Mesa OS has never sounded right to me. Greenbacks help IMO, but still don't pair as well as the 'proper' combination.

Those should have the great sounding 6402 cones...very sought after; I like those better than any Blackbacks; they sound almost identical to the cream backs I had in my 74 cab. Pulsonics edge them all though. But they are better to my ears than any other GB type, heritage or MiC.

Yup. All have the 6402 cones. I was stoked that the speakers were still in there. Probably because you had to dismantle the whole damn thing to get them out.

It's dumb but I've been too nervous to consistently use my older 1960AC with the AFX rig for fear of blowing them. At least now I have another set. Just need to find a home for them.

What a difference the cab makes. Speakers sounded not so great in the H&K cab; had me a bit worried the speakers were fubarred.

Decided against putting them into the Recto cab and used them to replace some V30s in a Marshall 1960a instead. Sounds glorious.

I tried GB's up top in my recto cab, not that great. That cab is just really built for those mesa v30's IMO

Thats the speakers, not the cab.

My buddy got a Mesa OS cab, but didn't like V30s. So I traded him some Greenbacks for his V30s. I did not like the Greenbacks in the Mesa cab at all. It was too boomy and not as well rounded as Greenbacks usually do. Greenbacks thrive in a traditional cab.

I did have Greenbacks in a Mesa Traditional cab I bought. Those sounded great. It's gotta be the oversized cab that woofs out those speakers.

If it were me and I was going to try a set of Greenbacks in a Mesa cab, I'd try a set of Heritage Greenbacks.

Heritage Greenbacks are the most modern sounding GB's to me. They have all the warmth and depth of standard GB's but without the notchy, papery high-end thing standard GB's can sometimes have with modern high gain amps.

I have an EVH 4x12 and a Recto 4x12 slant cab in my studio at the moment and the EVH cab has Heritage GB's (rebranded as EVH Greenbacks or whatever, but it's literally a Heritage Greenback with a different sticker on it) and it sounds fantastic. Absolutely hangs with the Mesa for high gain tones. Really it's just slightly smoother on top and maybe slightly bigger sounding, which might even be explained by the slant vs straight cabs. Other than that in the room they are quite similar sounding.

The thing about "the Greenback sound" is that, partly, they're 16 Ohm speakers in classic cabs.

I personally prefer 16 Ohm speakers most of the time, but that's particularly true with Greenbacks.

Have to agree, I love the G12M heritage. An great all-rounder for many styles and a real improvement over the regular model.

I love greenbacks in everything I've tried so far. I had them in Orange PPC412's and I thought they sounded great! I prefer the G12EVH/black backs to standard though.
