Or the alternative guitar heroes

The guys who have the technical ability but chose to move away from the traditional shredding route

To my mind billy corgan. the guy can play, he can even shred, but he's eschews that in favour of textural playing which people sometimes don't rate but requires the musical know how and knowledge to make it work.

guitar antihero number one, number two anybody ? ;)

These days the guitar antihero is the shredder. :D

Looking forward to the amazing anti hero Pablo Gilberto's new album.

You maybe right actually   but i notice they're doing it in a tongue in cheek kinda way

Tom Morello- Rage
Thurston Moore/Lee Ranaldo-Sonic Youth
Joey Santiago-Pixies
Dean DeLeo-Stone Temple Pilots

Just my 2 cents

Rivers Cuomo from Weezer is quite the GIT shredder, although most people would have no idea.

Gilbert-esque chops from what I've heard.

Most definitely has to be Tom Morello of Rage.

I agree. He gets a lot of hate around here but he can play "normal". He just chooses have his own unique voice.

It looks like Rivers used to be an 80's rocker kinda guy. He looks a lot different in the pics than he does now!

It's no joke. It's pretty well known in the industry that he's a monster player. That's kinda the inside joke with Weezer.

You can hear some tasty riffs in some Weezer tunes. The guy always has a really cool tone. He is a closet shredder!

I have heard corgan and morello shred but didn't think either of them were particularly good at it. I doubt either of them could have been successful if they continued down that path.

I know it is not what you are looking for but I think Kotzen is pretty interesting. He has the talent to play all the shred guitar hero instrumental stuff he wants but decided to start singing and make more user friendly tunes.

Well it is a shock to me that the guy from Weezer was a shredder, but Gilbert-esque is a reach, i listened to some of the Avant Garde stuff and he's not in Gilberts league or anywhere close to it, but who is?

But the guy was smart. He could have stuck with his hair band that was going nowhere and he realized that the entire genre was dead so he formed a mall punk band wrote some pop songs, poof. He's a millionare. But let's remember, WRITING music that people can listen to on a huge scale is a challenge that most of use fail at. Ok Weezer sucks, but go ahead and try and write an albums worth of that kind of music and not have it suck. Suck meaning that nobody buys the record, no tour, no money, etc, etc.

I love Weezer's old stuff. There new stuff is garbage, but like Blue album is awesome

The guy is extremely smart, he goes to Harvard, more of a reason to love him!

rivers coumo took lessons and hung out with the guys from fates warning. I would kill for the tone he got on the first album.

my vote for anti-hero would be Johnny Marr of The Smiths and to a lesser extent Peter Buck of REM.
