Got my pair of Guytron Bigtone 55 speakers in yesterday to replace the Swamp Thangs in my BuzzBomb. Graydon Stuckey described them to me as Vintage 30s without the annoying upper midrange, and a very sparkly top end, so I thought I'd give 'em a whirl.
So far I like them a lot, even though it's obvious they need to be broken in by the level of stiffness in the high end. These speakers have a very "woody" characteristic to them with high gain, and sound BRILLIANT clean. They're almost the polar opposite of the Swamp Thangs (lower wattage, very British voiced, more highs and high mids, no ridiculously high efficiency rating). They rip for straight up rock. I'm hearing a lot of different Celestion traits in it, which makes sense; I guess Guy Hedrick wanted a speaker with all of the things he liked about the different Celestion speakers he's had over the years. It has that Greenback woodiness to it, the G12H30 deep low end, the sweet highs of a Blue, and the midrange cut / rock 'n roll vibe of the Vintage 30.
I can only imagine how much sweeter the highs will get once these are broken in (about 15-20 hours according to Graydon). That's really the only thing I don't like so far, and I suspect they will get less stiff as time goes on. I got them for $100/speaker, which is a pretty sweet deal considering shipping was free
Also, I feel the need to give Graydon Stuckey some serious customer service props; not only was he helpful in describing the speaker, he facilitated a fantastic transaction as well. I ordered them Monday night and received them on Thursday, with communication from Graydon all the way. Absolutely a class act!
Definitely a sleeper speaker; I hope someone else will check these out!
