Ok, all my major shit had to be sold. For the time being i'll have to be going digital. What's the best combo for practice? I mainly play metal. The options i've looked at are:

Amplitube+Apogee Duet+ KRK 5 monitors running through my Mac Air
or
Yahama THR10x

What's going to give me the best tone? I can get the apogee duet for cheap from a friend and he'll throw in Amplitube. So it's going to end up being close in price: $450 for monitors/amplitube/apogee vs $300 for the THR . god this sucks.

Input, experience, knowledge would be appreciated.

are you stuck on either of those 2 ?? don't write off the blackstar ID stuff. Cheaper than both the other 2..... I have only played them in shops but got some pretty cool sounds out of them

whatever will get me the best tone in a small practice environment without costing me too much

Grab an Eleven Rack. You can get one for under 300 these days if you look around a bit.

EDit: ah, realized it doesn't come with protools. I doubt it's still getting supported though right?

Love the amplitube stuff and you will also be able to mix your stuff through the KRK or listen to music.

The yamaha is good for audio, not so much for mixing, its modelling is pretty good but ok, it kind of seems limited for variety vs amplitube.

In any case I'd go with amplitube/KRK.

Well you have alot of options.

There are many free amp sims and modelers online. Reaper also has a free trial since you are talking DAW's.

BIAS Desktop is like $100 as well. Honestly doesn't get better than that IMO if you are going PC/Digital route.

Peavey VIP 2. Seriously, try one. For the $200 I spent its the best practice amp ever. Great for metal. Can hang with a crazy drummer if needed also. I rarely bother to fire up my tube amps at home anymore. I also picked up a used Sampera II controller from GC for like $80 which really opens things up.

peavey does make some great practice amps.

The Bandit can get pretty brutal as well.

Yah, it's either going to be this or the THR10x. I just need to try out the THR10x and if it can't handle low tunings i'll be picking up the monitors. I know myself, and i know i'd get carried away with the monitors/software so i'm hoping the THR will suffice and just be done with it.

I'm a pretty big advocate of Amplitube, although I haven't played the Yamaha. With the exception of "The Outsider" and "Fuel," all the covers in the link below were done with Amplitube 3. Hope it helps your decision.

If it was me and I was looking for an amp rather than playing through my computer I would check these out. I haven't played one in person but the videos sound decent for what it is. They should be easy to find at most music stores so I would try one in person first. This way you don't spend much on you temp. set up so you can start saving to replace your other gear sooner.

I'm friends with a guy named Warren Hughes over on Facebook. He uses a Blackstar ID60 head for all his vids. One of them is a Mr. Scary contest submission video. It sounds awesome , I think they're 499 at Sweetwater...has USB on it for direct recording quick and painless.
