Hey guys, new to the forum and figured I would make my first post about an issue I have been having with finding quality guitar cables. I have been searching for months and months now for a cable that I feel isn't robbing me of tone. It seems like most, if not all cables on the market today rob you of the smoother high end tone that I really love. I've spent thousands of dollars on cables and I'm getting really tired of this seemingly never ending quest for a quality cable!!!!!!!
Does anyone have any suggestions??? Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. I have a few of the Mogami Platinum cables but unfortunately I cannot find any under 12 feet. I really prefer 5 foot cables... (should have added that in my original post) I wonder why more companies do not make 5 foot cables.

Monster Cables, no offense, I would rather not even play guitar than use those. They sound like tin cans to my ears, JMO.

I have no preference on a cable, except to say that I won't use Monster products of any sort based on the way they do business.

You could not give me Monster Cable... To each their own, but with the way the Monster conducts business, I couldn't ever use them.

That said, I make my own cables using Mogami or Canare with quality ends.

Good short link for the "differences" between the two.

What cables have you tried? I am really digging the Evidence cables

Over the years i've accumulated pretty much everything but I always end up with the Voodoo Cables from Trace at Voodoo. They sound great and if I were in the market, I would definately buy them again.

theres a topic already about what cables everyone prefers dumbletone - use the search function and check it out. it would be well worth your reading i think. you will get alot more repeats of whats already in that topic right here in this one.

+1 on the mogami. i buy in 250' bulk lengths and cut my cable to size using the connectors that i prefer for the application. its cheaper that way, and plus i have better control over the soldering connections.

as a tonal aspect i like mogami's the most, but im not partial to them over brands like monster cable. the only cable that i refuse to use on the upper end scale are colossal cables which are too perfect to my ears - they add a high end presence to your tone that i really hate with a passion. you cant dial it out.

again, check out the topic "what cables do you use"

Nile @ Solid Cables
and Brian @ Collosal cables

are BOTH class acts and make fantastic sounding stuff... i own both !

Honestly if that is how you feel about cables then I think you are reading WAY too much into it. SRV and Jimi used cheap radio shack coil cables, and your comment saying that most cables rob you of your "smoother high end tone" is a little backwards. Cheaper cables tend to have higher capacitance (generally) and therefore sound darker, making your high end smoother. This is why SRV and Jimi used the coil cables, very high capacitance, nice rounded high end.

So my recommendation is to take a step back and not think about gear so much.

My buddy tried PRS cables. He said they are the best he has tried.

I use both Two-Rock crystal clear cables and Analysis plus yellow oval. Those are my favorites.

I always make my own. I use Canare or Mogami and Switchcraft or Neutrik ends.

OK this jackass has spent "thousands of dollars on cables". I think we are being bamboozled. Wonder if he has found the holy grail of straps yet?

I use Monster. Great cables!!!

When i played out a lot i would break a Monster cable every 3 weeks or so. Some crappy no-name cables I've had for years were much more sturdy. Yes, the cables got yanked, kicked, spilled beer on, thrown, etc. But the Monsters weren't as sturdy as i thought they'd be.

I have an Elixir cable on the way to tone test. They sent me an email asking if I would test it (and keep it) so I said sure! The youtube comparison vid that I saw leaves me wondering if I will like it. The tone difference was dramatic but the extra high end that come through with the Elixir cable was not something that I am sure will sit well with me.

Probably, but I'm just responding to others in the thread anyway.

one of my buddies swears by them - quality wise i would have to say his are more sturdy than the ones i make. BUT the quality was what lacked - it, to me anyway, sounded sub-par to others. just has a robbing effect, its hard to explain.

i used to sware by planet wave cables unti i broke the ends off twice, one end on two different cables. the sad part is, i actually like how planet waves sound. but i refuse to buy anything with that shitty of quality control and plastic use. ive been using mogami now for almost a year and im pretty pleased.

I like this guy alot.

I don't know why everyones hating the monster cables so much, yea I've had a few break but they've all been under extreme situations, all were on my pedal board and it got dropped or knocked over or something and snapped off the tips etc. And this should be a non issue when you buy a monster cable you can walk into any guitar center or sam ash and they will give you a BRAND new one for free of exactly whatever you have, I've done it with a speaker cable, and 3 guitar cables, the speaker cable they didn't have exactly what I originally did but they gave me the best they had. Anyway, the guitar cables I got exactly what I had before hand, a 20 foot rock cable, a 12 foot rock cable and a 6 inch patch cable, also as far as I know they are the only ones that actually seal their connections tight shut, I'm not exactly sure how the process is but it's basically encased in a plastic seal underneath the jack it self if you unscrew it, also the monsters are 24k gold plated, which arguably doesn't make any difference unless your jack is as well, and the cables are good quality solid and to me are one of the few cables that I've tried that don't sound to "hi-fi" with harsh highs and they aren't unbalanced, they do color the tone of the guitar a bit, but every cable does it's just a different flavor of sound and I actually like how it sounds. They are also the most silent cables I have tried, they keep my rig so quite that I don't use a noise gate on either of my amps, it's just not at all necessary.

I think a lot of people don't understand the importance of a good buffer as the first thing in your signal line esp when most of us are running through quite a few pedals, patch cables and at least 25 feet of cables, try plugging in two different lengths of the exact same cable directly into the amp, a 10-12 footer, and then a 20 footer, you'll hear a huge difference in the sound of your tone, just what I've noticed anyway IMHO this is the biggest issue for people having cable troubles.
