Has anyone soldered Evidence Audio Lyric HG cable?

Kind of different than the mogami I have so not really sure what to match up. There is a white/black in the middle and a braided shield on the outside, so how do I solder this? For my Mogami, there would be 1 wire in center and a shield on the outside.

Nevermind found a video on youtube, looks like you cut the shielding off :)

EDIT: see below and don't screw it up like I did on my first try

My soldering skills would have to get much better for that high priced cable. Every time you have to trim or as I do, have a little soldering snafu....cha-ching!

I don't like soldering these Neutrik jacks though. Too me, they are a pain in the ass. Which ones are you using?

I'm using the Neutrik NP2C/B, if you don't have them plugged into something they move around like crazy and it gets annoying. I plug it into a empty pedal without any guts inside and just solder it from there. Way easier when the plug doesn't go moving around.

I started with Mogami cable and after I was able to do them efficiently I am now starting some high priced cable just for some short runs, like the Siren 2 speaker cable and just 2 lyric HG cables to go from guitar > amp

I think I did something wrong though, it's kind of noisy

Hmm.. looks like I have the strip the entire black wire.. oops

EDIT: See below so you don't screw it up like I did!

Ok problem solved. For future reference for anyone who is going to make Lyric HG cable. There are 2 wires inside, black/white as well as the shielded braid. Strip the wire, then cut braid shield. Strip the black wire completely! Then strip the white wire enough to solder the tip, remove the carbon skin on the lead as well. If you don't strip the black wire completely or remove the carbon skin it's noisy as hell. Also like the video said, cut the middle of the three clips on the strain relief clip, the cable is fat as hell and is hard to screw it on tightly if it's on there.

I just finished 2 10' cables and they are dead silent now

Here's a vid from evidence audio that shows how to do it. Wish it was better quality and the guy would actually talk.

How the hell do you embed?  ok got it

ok, first off, whoever made that video did it WRONG!

you shouldn't cut the sheild off BOTH ends, only one.

white connects to tip on both ends.. black connects to the plug ground on one end, and on the other the SHIELD AND THE BLACK connect to the ground.. you're basically running your cable without a ground shield right now.. you're passing a ground signal, but its not shielding the other conductor.

your other option would be to eliminate the black conductor all together, and use white -> white, shield -> shield.

I have and here's the correct way to make a cable exactly like a factory evidence;

The white conductor is the Hot and is connected to the tip of both plugs

The black wire is the ground and connects to the sleeve of both plugs

The braided shield is connected to the sleeve of only the connector with the red boot (the red strain relief cap) and is floating at the other end

In order to trim the wire without the green braid "shedding", loop a piece of Scotch magic tape around the cable. One then cuts about halfway leaving about 3/8" of tape so that the the braids don't fray and shed. When cutting, use a delicate touch so that the plastic is cut but the copper shield isn't scored by the blade or cut. Start with the side that has the black boot as that side's shield will be cut away anyway.

When stripping the conductors, gently also strip away an extra 1/8" of the thin black shield or you may ground out the signal.

Good on ya. Damn, that is a good idea. I was putting them in a vise. The ones I have done end up OK, just takes me forever it seems to get one done. Guess I will practice some more!

Thanks for catching that! Yeah it looks like the video is wrong. I emailed Mark at Lavacable last night when I was building them and got the right response this morning, fixed and all is well now.

What's funny is it's made by evidenceaudio or I think it is since its the user name  Maybe just some user who is pretending to be them

Thank you Andy and all for helping. Thanks for having me part of your music, Cyndicate.

That is me in the video, and HOLY CRAP I can't believe I didn't offer additional context to avoid misleading people.

The lesson there is mostly about how to get the NP2RCS onto the Lyric HG. On the "input" side of the cable.

Certainly both sides are not made that way, and I don't speak to removing the carbon-loaded skin and such.

I had someone ask how I get the plug to fit so I shot that video while putting one on, and threw the video up.

Without extra info I can see how the video can mislead.

I do have written instructions and such to supplement here:

http://www.evidenceaudio.com/marketing/assemblyinstructions/

When I have a moment (Trying to solder now) I will add notes to that video... even just text... offering greater clarity and pointing to the URL above.

One day I'll re-do the video as it SHOULD be done.

Thanks,
Tony
