I am looking at a heartfield talon to use primarily as a back up. I only own one guitar at the moment and I am gigging more this summer. Anyone have experience with these guitars?
I think I had a beater Heartfield Talon IV for a while. I never got around to actually playing it, just put it together and sold it. From what I remember it was an ok grade craftmanship.
I had a Talon V, the highest end one. And it was fine, nothing special compared to an RG. It was basically just an RG with a Floyd Pro and Dimarzios. The knobs sucked too.
If I were you, I'd just find a used RG550, slap some decent pickups in it, and call it a day.
i had a Talon II, i think it was, 15 years ago. it was a great axe--an Ibanez rip-off, for sure. i even read at the time that they were made by the Ibanez factory, under sub-contract from Fender. but very well built.
mine was the 22-fret one. the neck was thin but very playable; not too thin. Original Floyd. basswood, and the body design has some extra cut-aways that a strat or Ibanez RG doesn't have. i don't remember what kind of neck heel it had.
one thing to watch out for--the 22-fret ones are normal 25.5" scale length, but the 24-fret ones are not. they are shorter scale length. in case that's important to you.
if your choice is between a Talon and an RG at the same price range, then i agree with polaris20--might as well go with the RG. especially if resale value is a concern.
but if you can score the Talon for cheap--i paid $175 used for mine, after it'd been hanging in the store for 6 months--then it's a great way to get a very good metal axe.
