I have this Dean explorer shaped guitar.

As you can see, the headstock is a V shape, and pulls the strings to their respective sides.

I had to cut the nut on the guitar a little bit deeper and wider to accommodate new string gauges, but now the high strings just pop right off the nut. They will not stay on at all.

I know I'm going to need a new nut, but does anyone have any suggestions to prevent this from happening in the future?

Thanks,

If you look at PRS SE nuts.

You can't really see, but the nut is quite alot taller than your average, say... Gibson nut. Check out Earvana Compansated nuts, they're great for intonation, my friend's guitar has one and the chords ring out really nicely, I personally despise Dean headstocks, this being one of the reasons.

Well, the fretboard is also taller, otherwise the action would be way too high, correct?

This nut is a bit less wide than a Les Paul nut. I should probably call Dean and buy a new nut.
