I just got a Bogner 3534 from a forum member. The amp shipped without a problem and I got it last week. I was out of town and today was able to take it out of the box and fire it up. The amp was perfectly packed and the seller even shipped an extra set of preamp tubes. I hooked it up to a Bogner 1x12 matching cab. When I fire it up, I started on the clean channel and the volume was a bit low. Then I heard a pop and the volume when up to where it was supposed to be. Then I noticed a burning smell and I immediately turned off the amp.

Any ideas of what it could be? I will contact Bogner customer support, but wanted to see if anyone here has a clue as to what the problem could be. Should I try the extra set of preamp tubes sent by the seller?

A good rule of thumb is always pull the tubes out and visually check them.
I’ve had a few tubes crack during shipment or even unseat.

My guess is the amp had a bad tube and it fried a resistor inside. But,that’s just a guess.

Did you check the fuses? Sometimes there’s fuses inside the amp also.

I’d swap the pre tubes out and see if that’s the problem. Usually a pre tube controls the clean and another the gain channel.

Change the tubes esp v1 and look at power tubes, Check the fuse like what has been stated. Otherwise I would think resistor.. Bogners are built like tanks don't fret just yet.

Definitely try some known good preamp tubes. I bought a new 3534 and nearly returned it due to pops, volume drops and randomly losing output completely on the blue and red channels. Turned out to just be a bad preamp tube and it's been solid since.

The burning smell is beyond simple tube swapping now. It's time to get it to a technician to check out.

This. It ain't a preamp tube, maybe an SGR.

I contacted Bogner and they asked me to check the tubes and fuses. I'll do that today, but I'm prepared to send the amp to Bogner if needed.

Well, I don't understand what happened, but the amp is now working perfectly. I follow your recommendations and took out both power tubes and the 4 preamp tubes to inspect them. All tubes seemed to be fine. Then I installed them again and proceeded to check amp fuses. Those look fine too. Checked the amp thoroughly inside and couldn't find any burning stains or smells. Crossing my fingers, I turned the amp on and waited 2 minutes with the amp on standby to let the tubes get warm. From there I went into Channel 1 and it worked perfectly. No pops when turning up the volume and no burning smell. Played with all controls for channel one until I settled in a great sound and from there did the same for channels 2 and 3. Spent 2 hours with amp on playing all three channels and everything worked perfectly.

The only explanation I have for the burning smell I felt yesterday when firing up the amp for the first time was maybe there was some a small piece of foam/paper/plastic or something from the amp packaging attached to a tube and when it got hot that piece of material burned. Is the only explanation I have.Anyways, thank you all for the responses and suggestions. You guys rock!

Congrats on your new amp.
Sorry you had troubles.
Glad to hear it may be resolved.
Popping and burning smell is never good.
Hope nothing further happens.
I'd probably still get it checked.
I always look things over before calling, especially after travel like that.
Good luck.
