Sorry to bother people with this but I need some help.

I purchased a guitar off of Reverb from some jack ass and it showed up damaged. Pickguard is shattered. I sent him email and told him I want a refund and I would send it back. He basically told me it was between me and Fed Ex at this point. I opened a dispute with Paypal. I requested a refund through Reverb. Guy did a horrible job of packing the guitar and the knobs are basically floating on a shattered pickguard.

How do I get my refund? Is there a way to get it back from Paypal?

Any help would be appreciated.

Reverb is useless. What you did is right. File a claim with Paypal and wait. They may request pictures, or info from you.

Save everything you can from the ad and take pics of what you got, I guess including the packing. Should be simple to tell PayPal that you did not receive the item as it was described in the ad.

And he's very wrong about FedEx. FedEx did nothing with you; you didn't pay them to ship or insure the guitar. He did. This works by you getting a refund and him dealing with FedEx.

yes I have done all that. I guess I should not have much hope in Reverb then bummer

It is going to take a few weeks but Paypal is who you need to dispute with. They will give the seller time to resolve the issue. Then you have to escalate the file and they make their decision which usually sides with the buyer.

I am not sure what their time frame is to allow a resolution. It might only be a few days? Look that up and then escalate asap. It takes a while but if you don't follow up it will take even longer.

Worst case if Paypal does not agree with you, then file dispute with CC company.

I feel you will be fine though with paypal.

First off it's with HIM and Fedex, not you. HE shipped it, the onus is on HIM to insure it PERIOD. Now, you should win this based on what paypal usually does, which is side with the buyer. But worse case scenario you can dispute the purchase and get your money back.

The more I deal with reverb the more I feel it's the new craigslist. Sorry you have an issue. Hope it works out.

would buying a new pickguard fix it? do you like the guitar? good deal? i'd keep and fix, sounds like a lot of trouble for something easily remedied.

Same situation happened to me with cab bought on Reverb. Poorly packaged. Stupidly poorly packaged. Seller blamed shipper. Seller was a dick, Reverb stepped in, shipper came and picked up item and box materials. I was refunded in FULL. Get on the phone with Reverb immediately!

Thanks so much to all for the advice. I have done it all. Seller is whacked. Tried to accuse me of damaging it. I will escalate for sure!!!

Who's the seller?

The seller said the same. I damaged it. When you tape a cardboard box to the cab and ship what do you expect?

The killer was I told him to double box it. So he took 2 open faced boxes and taped them.

I sent Reverb the pics of packaging. Reverb laughed. Same with shipper. I asked Reverb to ban the seller in my transaction. Absolutely a dumb ass!

What kind of guitar, did it have a case, did he use any padding? Shattering a pickguard seems like it would be really difficult. I view Reverb just as a way to get stuff seen if I want to sell there. I do PayPal only, that way, I am protected, their credit card system is less safe. As a buyer, PP is much better than most other methods. I can't imagine them not siding with you. Shippers can be bad, that is why you way over pack, double box, and make it really hard for this to happen. Hope it gets resolved soon, can be stressful.

Reverb can actually hold funds whether through paypal or reverb checkout. I bought a guitar a few months ago and it arrived with a nice chip in it that wasnt in the photos or description. I was trying to work with the seller but was ready to write off my loss. I wanted the guitar and didnt want to return but wouldnt have offered as much if I knew about damage. As I said I was going to write it off as the seller was making no offer of partial refund and was telling me he could get a better deal for his guitar locally so I should ship it back. The seller actually alerted reverb that there was an issue and reverb put a hold on the funds I had already sent him via paypal. Reverb will act as a sort of mediator in the dispute, ultimately they can only get you a full refund and you return, they cant force sellers to give partial refund but they will mediate the situation and hold funds until the buyer confirms resolution. In the end for me I got a partial refund and the seller got his money released once I confirmed I received the partial refund. Again, I did not even initiate this, the seller contacted reverb about the dispute and they still froze the money I sent him via paypal 7-10 days previously. I have found reverb helpful in this case, now I've had other issues where a seller decided the balk on a deal after it had been accepted but before payment sent. In those cases reverb is little help as they cant physically force anyone to ship something, they can only get you your money back or cancel a transaction and ban a bad dude.

In this case the pickguard is made of plexi glass or hard plastic and the guitar is from 1986. The case was the most beat up POS I have ever received. If the guitar had been packed properly in the case this probably would not have happened. Obviously it bounced around and the guard shattered right under the knobs. The tone knob is floating now in shattered plastic. I cannot use that and have no interest in it now. BS that I have to go through a claim but the guy is whacked.

Looks like maybe an Ibanez Proline? Not a standard pickguard to replace...
Good luck with your claim

You've done all the right things as long as you used regular PP not gift. ;)

That's a pretty rare Ibanez, not so sure I would throw the towel in so quick on this. Warmoth or someone should be able to make you a replacement pickguard...
