Anyone try KT66's in their Herbert? I have 2 Ruby EL34s, 2 Winged C EL34s, and 2 Winged C 6L6's in mine and it sounds great!! But I think it could be alittle more... Open sounding. I've read about lots of people doing the kt88s and the 6550 in theirs and saying it really opened it up but when I threw some kt88s in mine it got alittle too dry for my taste.

You could try them, I run a pair of 88's and a pair of 66's in my Dual Rectifier and like it.

Personally, I think the 88's sound terrific in the Herbert. But I love that tight, dry, ice picky low end too.

When i tried the 88s in mine i had 2 el34s 2 6L6s and the two kt88s. I think im gonna try 4 el34s and the two kt88s. should keep more of the saturation and open up the compression a bit. its at the studio right now so i cant do it till i get it back. I wish i had some kt66s laying around though!!

RJF, I think i read in another post about different tube combinations that you use all 6550's in your herbert or did you go over to the 88s now?

Wasn't me, I had all EL34's in mine when I bought it, and at one point I was so dissapointed with so much compression on ch3 that I was considering selling my Herbert. Then, I decided to try KT88's. I went with 3 pairs of JJ 88's and it sounded much different. Much more open (compression went down to a tolerable level), tighter bottom end, and dryer with that ice picky feel with fast palm muted picking.

I have never tried 6550's, or been interested in them. They are a bigger 6L6, and a KT88 is a big EL34. I normally prefer the more mid range from the 34/88 type tubes.

I have to agree with you on the more midrange desire. the guitar is a midranged instrument. Yeah I knew the 6550 was just a bigger 6L6. I dont have much interest in that either. Channel 3 really is far too compressed for my taste. It's SUPER fucking clear which is nice but i want it more open. I gotta pick up some tubes and try some shit out. I'll give the 88s another shot and let them sit in there for a while and see how it grows on me.
