I'm currently running a Randall Lynch box with JJ tubes into an Avatar 4 x 12 with mixed greenbacks and eminence Super V's. Awesome tone.. but I notice I pretty much play with my presence at 5 pm which is almost full pin. On my JCM800 I don't play with it past 2 pm really. So I'm thinking, the Randalls must have more high end roll off, anybody know for sure?. Where do you guys like your presence? I am finding I like a more cutting tone the older I get. I used to scoop when i was young playing Master of puppets or Rust in Peace but now I seem to have joined the mids club!

Mids is a code word for tone. Congrats on finding it.

I run a Plexi Style Marshall so it's a little different, but I usually run it around 2 to 3 oclock. If I want less high end for a part I roll of my tone knob similar to EJ.

depends on the guitar. If I'm playing strats I turn presence way down, for humbuckers its about noon-1pm

If you are running JJpres, they are pretty dark overall. Try some china 12ax7b's if you have some. My friend has a Lynchbox with the matching celestion cab. We put the chinese tubes in it, sounds really good..not too dark.

That said...on my Marshalls the presence is usually at 3 oclock sometimes higher. But I run my amp cranked so it needs it up higher.

I normally keep mine between 0 and 3 depending on the guitar.

I have a RM100 and I keep the pres at 11:00, mids 1:00 to 3:00, and treb at 11:00. Plenty of cut and clarity running through Scumback M75's for me.

I keep the presence off or 9:00 on my JMP. I don't like ice picks. :D

Get rid of the JJ's they are dark. Put a Tung Sol 12AX7 in V1.

I rarely run presence past 9-10 o'clock. My mids are always at least at 1-2 o'clock. Never scooped

Preamp tubes make that much diff eh? I have 3 chinese 12ax7's still in the box..maybe I should swap em in. The judge module to me could be brighter, I like my Brahma and newly received Hilligan modded SL+ (AFD tone for days!) but again I am at 5 pm on the presence with the amp. v1 would be the preamp tube hardwired to the amp while v2 and v3 would be in the modules?

Stand 10-15' away from the cab at whatever volume you like to play at and have someone roll the presence control for you. What what you hear standing in front of the amp is one thing, what is projected is another. Marshall's though, I tend to run around 2-3:00, depending on how the mids and treble are voiced. But, sometimes Mids and Presence can be a fucking battle for me with an amp. Presence does not equal ice picks in general. Depends on the speakers too and depends on the gain characteristics and how much the amp compresses as you ride the gain up. You are trying to offset the lack of clarity at increasing gain levels.

Presence on all my Marshall-type amps (Super Lead, Chupacabra and JCM800) is usually around 10:00 or so. Mids maxed.

... and just to add to this, what you hear standing directly in front of the cab is not exactly what you hear at a 45 degree angle or at other locations. Everything related to tone and sound is relative to the listener, their position, the venue, et al. Unless we are all playing in the same room, same amp, same speakers, etc. this discussion is pointless.

I actually had done this a few days ago while a friend played my guitar. At my settings on the Lynch box it sounded awesome. Seriously, it was full and it had the top end crunch I like to hear. No sharp highs cutting the ear. The other thing I find with my rig is that the Gmajor II actually darkens the tone of the amp a tad. In other words, take it out of the loop and I feel the tone is a tad brighter. Maybe that doesn't make sense but I hear it. That said, I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it. It sounds good to my ears so that is where i will leave it. I might swap the JJ's for chinese preamp tubes though.

Depending on the loop design, units used and length of cables, there can definately be a change in tone....
