I have an '83 2204, that I'd like to get modded, and I know there are a slew of modders out there who are well liked around here. Gower's stuff is a bit out of my price range, but I've been told Golub's Lead mod is the way to go if you can't have Gower do it. I'm in a hard rock/metal band (think Maiden/Megadeth/Metallica/GNR/VH/White Snake), but I'd say I want my tone to be closer to an Aldrich/Slash/Paul Gilbert style. I understand that Golub's Lead Mod is used by Doug, so I figured this is probably the way to go. I heard that Fortin and Cameron are no longer doing mods, and I've heard some so-so things about Frank Levi's recent stuff.

Do you guys think Golub is the way to go for what I'm looking for?

BFG AMPLIFICATION, knowledgeable, reasonably priced. excellent quality, fastest turn around time, stands behind his work. and Brian is a nice guy too.
I have 3 modded marshalls and a modded jet city he has done for me, top notch.

I had a Golub lead mod. Sounded great but I still needed an eq pedal in front to tighten it up. BFG does great work, although I havent had one. Enough guys here have. Why don't you try a pedal or two in front? Seriously sounds as good with the right pedals. Cheap Danelectro eq (20 bucks) mids boosted, joyo ultimate drive (40 bucks) level noon, bass maxed, mids under half, treble 0900 presence to taste and pre maxed..jmp 2204 heaven. Good luck!

Another vote for trying pedals. 2204s are GREAT amps for taking pedals, plus the classic unmodded 2204 tone is KILLER. I recently played a gig at a large club and brought mine out, and was smiling ear to ear when I was soundchecking. If you play places that allow that amp to breath, I'd highly suggest not modding it.

Ended up getting a good deal on a few pedals... don't think I'm going to get this modded anymore.

guitar -> Decimator -> Keeley DS1 -> GE7 -> OD2 -> Sonic Stomp..... :rock:

It's awesome.

This ^^^^^^! I have had Marshall's modded by Bray, Voodoo, and FJA. I am done with the whole modded thing. I have come to realize that you can drop an Overdrive or two in front of one of these things and get that sound. But if you are going to go with the modded thing, Jerry at FJA has my vote.

I have an '82 2204 and considered the mod route. But I went pedals instead. Tried many including tube screamers. Finally settled on a Blackstar HT dual. It's a tube driven preamp in a pedal format. Two additional tube gain stages. Set the amp clean and use the pedal for tube driven crunch and boost channels. Does not sound like a typical OD pedal. Sounds like a fat sounding JCM800 with a bunch more gain. All without touching the amp. It also converts a single channel 2204 into a three channel machine.

Egnater Megadrive mod...adds an extra tube gain stage on the HI input only, rewires the jacks so the LOW input is what the regular un-modded HI would be...gives about 20 db of gain, makes tone controls more active...can also do scoop switch for midrange and low end density (reasonance) knob...Bruce can also add a tube driven effects loop. I have two (2203s), but it's equally effective on 2204s...

save a few extra bucks and send to gower!! he rules!!

Hah, more than "a few extra bucks".....

I'm pretty happy with how it sounds with the pedals right now, would consider modding in the future. I'd do a demo with my current set up, but my Tascam DR05 is getting a lot of recording distortion, even at the lowest possible recording volume on the device.
