High gain clarity with V30's

I was noticing some lack of clarity today with my high volume high gain tone. (EL34 JSX with slant Mesa Trad. size V30 cab)
Everything sounds good when playing standing up, but reality kicks in when I sit 5 feet in front of the cab.
I keep my gain pretty low for modern metal playing (5.5) but with the added breakup from the V30's, things can get kinda...foggy.
I ended up reducing my gain to 4.5 and doing some other small eq adjustments. All while sitting on the floor in front of the cab.
I was mainly concentrating on the speakers interpretation of the changes, trying to find the cleanest, clearest high gain tone.
Although my ears hate me me now, (I only wore one earplug so my perception wasn't totally compromised) my amps settings really compliment the V30's natural breakup and eq curve alot better.

Has anyone else stuck their neck out and went "face to face" with their V30's to hear what they really sound like when playing high gain at high volume? It may interest you.

i stand about 4 foot away facing a full stack every time i play?

I've never really found a lack of clarity with them. I have had 2 4x12's stacked for quite awhile, so one is always blowing at my head. I play with my volume on a 50W head about 1/3 of the way up and with a 30W head, 1/2 way up. Gain is between noon and 1 usually, with Bad cat hot cats. I'm using Uber cabs now so I only have half the V30's I used to. I've tried several speakers in different combo's but the V30's have always been there...I can't seem to get the tone I want without them.

I use only V30's now. I tried 25W Greenbacks, H30's, Heritage versions of both, Scumbacks, you name it. V30's sound good at low volume, high volume, sound good clean and dirty. They don't fall apart, stay tight in the bass and I actually like getting a bit of break-up from such a high wattage speaker, something you normally don't get unless you're playing the 25W Greenbacks. You are right about the gain on the amp but that isn't a bad thing, many guys should be turning that dial counter-clockwise anyway. I have to say that the V30 isn't perfect but it does more things well compared to a bunch of others. The cabinet can also be a factor too.

Hey let us know when you get that Mills Classic cab.
