I was noticing some lack of clarity today with my high volume high gain tone. (EL34 JSX with slant Mesa Trad. size V30 cab)
Everything sounds good when playing standing up, but reality kicks in when I sit 5 feet in front of the cab.
I keep my gain pretty low for modern metal playing (5.5) but with the added breakup from the V30's, things can get kinda...foggy.
I ended up reducing my gain to 4.5 and doing some other small eq adjustments. All while sitting on the floor in front of the cab.
I was mainly concentrating on the speakers interpretation of the changes, trying to find the cleanest, clearest high gain tone.
Although my ears hate me me now, (I only wore one earplug so my perception wasn't totally compromised) my amps settings really compliment the V30's natural breakup and eq curve alot better.
Has anyone else stuck their neck out and went "face to face" with their V30's to hear what they really sound like when playing high gain at high volume? It may interest you.
