You need to go up and see Nick at Alto Music.

I'm working on this, we already hooked up on pm and sunday would be great for me, just before I head back to Montreal. It's gonna be nice to meet a fellow forumite, too!
cool! I'm going to try to make it up there on Sunday too. I'll bring my Landry and one of my custom made wahs.

For a second, I thought you said your laundry...

There was always that one douchebag at Rudy's who was always on the phone yelling at anyone trying an amp out.  And yeah, 48 street used to be a great place to visit. Now, it blows since Sam Ash muscled everyone out...

I don't see how Sam Ash could muscle out the smaller guys.... they carry different classes of gear. In fact, for a long time they existed side by side. I think it's more the economy than anything. Less tourists spending vacation $$$.....

Sam Ash has a ton of money and rent is very expensive. Pretty easy concept. That and, you know that crappy low end gear? It usually tends to out sell high end gear, especially in a bad economy. Those Epiphones and Squiers fly out the door faster than $4k Les Pauls that sit on their walls. Also, Sam Ash has high end gear as well, in addition to drums, keyboards, recording gear and whatever else.

I spoke with Kage over the phone yesterday afternoon and all I can say is what a great guy he is, he gave me some great tips and even offered me to guide me through the city. I mean the guy doesn't even know me - well now he does! - and he kindly gave me his personal phone number, took time to talk with me and school me on some stuff about NY. I appreciate it A LOT, thx Kage.

Now I feel like I owe him a beer - or two - so when I get in NJ tonight, I'll give him a call and see what we can do. If it's not tonight, it'll be tomorrow night, we'll hook up and have a laugh.

And Kage, if you ever come here in Montreal, it'll be my pleasure to guide you through the city. Not only you do have a contact in Montreal, but you also got a friend.
Thx for everything man, means a lot to me!

I agree 48th street is a mere shadow of it's former self. But, if you are there seeing the big tree (in Rock Center), you HAVE to walk around the corner to the 48th street stores, if only to gawk and look around.

Manny's Music is now owned by Sam Ash, but the building and store floor is still the same, and very historic. And, Sam Ash NYC does have some nice used guitars, and expensive new guitars. Worth looking, while you're there.

Enjoy!

If it weren't for Manny's music PRS might not be the company it is. I read a story that Paul Reed Smith was going into NYC to try and sell some orders and he said to himself that the trip could make or break him. And Manny's put in a large order of PRS guitars after they tried a few prototypes he brought with him, the rest is history as they say.

More great replies, thx everyone!

I'll try to do'em all, my NY schedule gets busier by the minute and I haven't left Montreal yet! I know I'm gonna walk a lot so I'll probably go take a peek at all yours suggestions, pricey store or not. Anyways, I'm not in the market for anything so...

If you folks have more ideas, throw'em!!!

Leaving Montreal around 2 pm, I still ahve time to check the board!

Thx!!

After you see the tree, have lunch or dinner at the Heartland Brewery, around the corner. Beer and burgers = yummy!

Thx man, I'll try that! The tree will probably be the first thing on the agenda tonite, after that probably Time Square... I dunno, so many stuff to see!

I was in NYC a month ago for my first time as well. I hit the shops close to where I was staying (Rudy's, SamAsh).
I was literally in Rudy's for only 5 minutes. There really was nothing there that I hadn't seen before, or cared to ask about.
The guys working seemed alright though.

Sam Ash was pretty well stocked, and while some of the clerks weren't very friendly they still didn't give me grief about playing some expensive guitars. They had a lot of Suhr, PRS, and Gibson customs in their back room.

I didn't bother stopping anywhere else since everyone on TGP warned me just like everyone on here is warning you. haha
