Hollow Body Pickup Recommendations

I'm building a Warmoth L5S hollow body guitar w/ 2 F holes. (It's a oversized Les Paul "type" shaped guitar, that has been hollowed out a lot. (here are the specs http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/bodies/vi ... action=l5s ).

The body is going to be Mahogany back and flame maple top. The neck and fingerboard will be unfinished Brazilian Rosewood. I would like the neck to have a warm, smooth, juicy tone that's full but not boomy or too mushy on the low end. I would like the bridge pickup to be warm, smooth, but with a bit more "bite" and spank to it.

I'm thinking of putting a Suhr SSV in the bridge and a Suhr DSV in the neck. Any comments or recommendations on those pickup choices for that guitar / wood? Where is the best place to get Suhr pickups? Indoor Storm I know does carry them. I would like to get them with chrome covers.

I'm also open to other pickup recommendations though :).

For any particular music? I mean, I love retrotron type pickups, TV Jones in particular, in a semi, but they're not exactly modern sounding or for heavier music.

I'm building this for blues, rock, hard rock. I'm wanting lower output pickups. I have my "metal" guitars so I'm not really needing anything super hot. I just want a good warm pickup for soloing in the neck, and a bridge pickup that is well balanced. I plan on using this with mostly clean / mid-gain uses. I am Egnater user, and will use it with the DLX, COD, EG3/4, SL, and VX.

That is quite interesting. Have you played through any of those pickups? Those are now sitting even with the Suhrs I'm looking at. I'm curious what those sound like! The old PAF's from Gibson are pretty awesome pickups!!! And having the same machines, holy crap! That's just damn cool.

SSV and DSV are great pickups, but, personally, I like something with a LOT more twang, bite, and personality when it comes to semi-hollowbodys.

Actually, TV Jones is all I use in hollowbody guitars.

I hear ya man. Never heard of the TV Jones pickups. I do want that twang and bite in the bridge for sure. But do want a warm smooth pickup in the neck for solos / jazz type stuff.

Check out Gibson's classic 57s. Great for blues, rock, hard rock and jazz.

The Throbaks were kinda blah IMO. My local tech shop replaced a set of Burstbuckers in a Gibson R9 with a set of Throbaks, Burtbuckers sounded better IMO, everyone in the shop thought so too. YMMV.

No I haven't. I play from Jazz to Classic Rock. I replaced the PU's in my Les Paul to 57's and love them. I have a BB1 and BB2 in my SG and love them for that guitar. The 57 classic plus in the bridge isn't exactly what a was looking for it's a little thin sounding, it has more winds and therefore a little hotter. Just doesn't haver that warm sound you get some nice harmonics when you play them together. See if there are any soundclips out there.

+1 on the TV Jones, they have a few different models too so you should be able to get what you want. If adjusting the gretsch pickups in my Brian Setzer hot rod doesn't help, than I am going to look at some TV Jones....

The best match that I am aware of for hollow bodies is a set of Bare Knuckle "Stormy Mondays":
http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/ZH- ... onday.html

Email Tim (the owner) for more info or check the BKP forum - there are loads of clips in the "Players" section.

I have to say, the clips on the Stormy Mondays are incredible for the neck pickup. I'm not sure I'd put that in the bridge. I did email Tim. I asked his comments. Maybe a Mule in the Bridge and a SM in the neck. That sounds like a good combo ;).

Damn nice pickups though!!!

Eric

Well I have to say that those Bare Knuckles PU's do sound pretty BadAss.

You cannot go wrong with a Bridge Mule in a Les Paul-ish guitar!

I have 6 pairs of BKPs. Never anything else in my guitars.

Just ordered a set of Nickel covered Bareknuckle Stormy Monday pickups! Can't wait to get this guitar built! It's gonna be bad ass!

Dude you won't regret it. From your description they are exactly what you're looking for. Did you get them with AII or AIV?

God save BKP
