I have had Dio's "Holy Diver" on heavy rotation over the last couple of weeks and I am blown away at how thin and wimpy Vivians tone is to open that album on "Stand Up and Shout". The rest of the songs have much better guitar tones. That one sounds like a transistor radio.

I had never noticed before, but yes you are right it is a completely different tone....maybe the rest of the album was les paul and SUAS was a shredder like his kramer or something

At the time though it sounded pretty bad ass....................

I think Twisted Sister had horrific sounding guitar parts. Rhythms especially.

I agree on the wimpy recorded tone on Stand Up and Shout.

Although, I saw Vivian last week with Last In Line, and his current live tone (even on SUaS) is anything but wimpy.

He came out and played Les Pauls through 100 watt Engl Blackmore heads, and almost decapitated everyone there.
His set up appeared pretty bare bones. Straight into the Engl, nothing seen in the FX loop, and two 4x12's. Very thick and heavy tone, and sounded great in the mix.

I was thinking that he had played the stuff on Hysteria for so long, that he would come out and just go through the motions, but I was wrong. He was having a blast, and seemed to enjoy the gig.

It was probably a take from some demo stuff they did. They liked how he played on it so they went with it.. that would be my guess. Probably direct to the board no mic..

What! No Kemper Profiling Amplifier? The nerve... :scared: ;)

Surely they are running some delay at the mixer before the PA as i highly doubt any rockstar would play their leads totally dry. In a one guitar band, that is going to sound lacking for shizzle.

I always thought that Dio had the guitar mixed really thin on all of his records up until around '93. It was like he heard this sound in his head and regardless of the guitar player, that was the sound that they were going to get. It's just all upper midrange.

I read an interview with Viv years ago and he said something along the lines of Dio making all the calls on the guitars. Straight into a JCM800 I believe.

I think its funny that Viv bashed Dio for years about the music, and now he's in a touring Dio tribute band.. Douche move, Just my 2 cents..

Not really. Bottom line is that he was underpaid at the time but he put up with it so he could be a rock star. The he/said Dio/said thing can go back and forth but the bottom line is that he wrote those tunes and the band and him never had bad blood. So what if they wanna go out there and kick some ass? People want to hear it so they brought it. It sure as hell beats the crappy shit Def Leppard put out with Viv.

I liked the tones on all the early Dio records. Stand up and Shout is some great playing. I am sure Dio ran the show - it was his name and his band. Glad Vivian is rocking out finally.....

^This^

I love that riff and the tone! I must just be getting old. I love that raw thin tone only because it defined a certain period. Same thing when I hear Mick Mars' "Shout at the Devil" tone. Just fits the period. :)

I dig that tone. It's classic and works well for the tune.

I love all the old Dio tunes and tones. Dio had a vision and went with it. You know who the artist is immediately when a guitar riff kicks in. It's Dio.
