I've been using the Marshallhead in one of my V's to great affect and have a second V I just got that I want to replace the 500T with a hotter Alnico for down-tuned stuff. Anyone used the Fenris or Timbrewolf? Seems the main difference is A5 vs. A2 but there might be more to it. I'm also considering the SD Custom Shop S-deco. I want to play C# metal but not a modern "Sneap" sound. Less gainy, ,more like old school Venom and Discharge. The newer Swedish band, Death Breath is a good indicator of what I'm going for.

I have a Fenris with an alnico 2 magnet in my Les Paul and I love it. The alnico 2 is a bit warmer than an alnico 5 and the Fenris is about 15k ohms so it's not super hot but just right for my taste. A great hard rock pickup that to my ears sounds like a JB with smoother top end and a bit firmer low end. It also cleans up really well for a higher output pickup too. Wolfe makes some good pickups and if you email him he'll steer you in the right direction. The alnico 2 might be a bit dark sounding for downtuning but ask Wolfe what he thinks.

He's actually local to me. I might see if he's OK with me getting a Fenris and a Timbrewolfe and then returning the one I like the least. The Seymour S-deco intrigues me but $160 is pretty steep and it's a total gamble. I know Wolfe would be able to offer tweaks or adjustments to nail it down. Plus I like giving money to local business when I can.

I use a Warpig A5 and it is killer. Would work well for Entombed type stuff.

A lot of those BKP's sounded pretty good on their site. They're a little pricey for me though.

When i want true boutique but not the cost i use smits. Badass pickups, love them as much as my motor city pickups!

In the limited editions tab, The db signature pickup will hang with the warpig. $90 new.

I have a Marshallhead in a Les Paul, and it sounds fantastic. But that's about as hot as I like to go. I feel that I get my best tone by using a low to medium output pickup, and let the amp do the work.
Good luck!

I have a few more amps since I posted that do a fair bit more gain than my plexi and will probably do just that. I have a Timbrewolf in my V right now and it has a good push but I'm not feeling the tone of it. It's balanced on the EQ but it has a coldness to it. I need to try another pickup I have to see if it's just the guitar or the pickup. Plus hearing a distinct tone is more difficult once you start tuning down a lot. I might try an older super distortion I have just for kicks or put in a 57 classic.

I used a Timbrewolf for a few years in one of my Les Pauls but I prefer the Marshallhead and have stuck with that for my hard tock guitar. I had Wolfe rewind the Timbrewolf into a Legend ...
