How are the newer Digitech Whammy pedals?

I remember years ago I had an original one that was absolutely awesome, but I sold it. I want one again, but iirc there were a couple generations of them that weren't that great at all. Is the one that's currently out decent?

The new ones sound very digital and have an awful sweep. They also suck some tone. I recommend either finding an old one or using a higher quality pitch shifter in a rack unit that has intelligent pitch shifting.

G-Force, Eventide, and/or Axe-Fx if you got money. If you are on a budget, look out for the Intellipitch. They're rare, but sound great.

Try to find a used Digitech DHP-33 Digital Harmony Processor, it was designed by IVL, the same company who developed the Whammy, plus it has a bunch other capabilities. It's a killer unit. A more powerful unit is the DHP-55, it too was done by IVL. IVL did the pitch software in the G-FORCE, but if you go that route, but a used one or a older unit off the shelf. There has been multiple reports of quality problems with the new lower price made in China G-FORCE.

Personally I prefer the Whammy II pedal, which was still IVL based, but it allows you to switch through the presets. Some people think it doesn't sound as good as the original Whammy, but the key to it, is setting the input gain. The original had a very unique auto companding circuit on it's input that would automatically adjust for gain variance. But the II version is the same DSP engine with more options. I have all of them, and use the WHammy II in my rig.

I think the EX-7 is decent, better then the standalone Whammy IV IMO. Still a tone sucker though so a true bypass loop is good.
