How bad ass is John Norum on this live show?

Something for use gear-heads to ponder, his rig is so simple, just a couple Marshall 2205's (yes, the JCM800 channel-switcher)a Roland Delay, Boss CS-5 and a standard Crybaby That's it!

Cool track from his first solo album, with a fantastic solo!

Cool!

Man. As I recall. No one I knew liked that band because of the keyboard on the intro to that one tune. Norum was great though with his Stratocaster, Marshall tone.
Band sounds good on this vid. Don't care for the guitar tone. :aww:

Watching this video, it kinda hit me. In the past, when the lights went dark, everyone would hold up their lighters. Today, everyone holds up their phones.

Also, does he ever play his old strats in this? I skimmed through it, and it seemed like it's all Gibson. His solo CDs when he played strats were the best.

I thought about the whole camera/cell phone thing as well. Any recent concert you see, all you see is everyone holding either up. Kinda makes me wonder if one really misses out on the "here and now" full experience if they're so busy trying to "record" the experience for future reliving. It's no big deal I guess, I just know that when I'm at a show, I may shoot a couple of pics but there's no way I'm going to dick around with my phone the whole time. I have plenty of memories that weren't backed up on video and somehow I'm just fine with that. :D

Oh, and also, Norum is a bad ass...one of my favorite players of all time.

Those 2205's are no slouches. He may have used the Cameron for a brief time but now, it's all straight up Marshall with KT88's if i am not mistaken. He's changed a few pieces like gone to a Hendrix dunlop wah and a MXR chorus but besides that, tone is in the hands baby! Think he is also fond of the carbon copy but still also uses those rack delays. Point is, he can make it work with any delay in the loop. The fact that he and Shenker both use 2205's has really made me want to pick one up. That said, hitting my 2204 with a good OD is essentially the same thing so for me, boost + marshall anything is the way i am keeping it! Now if you gents will excuse me, I need to get my dog to beginner's obedience, we are second last from the bottom and needs work. He sucks in group settings and needs more time on rig talk..

He is awesome and i love his playing.

But whats with the wah in every solo..

Gilbert, Yngwie, RR, Sykes, etc.................all have simple rigs. The burners here have simple rigs for the most part except Zachman but he gets a pass since he was monster rig from the start

Lesson to be learned here.

Also all this Aldrich talk but from what I gather from guys like Chubtone his rig was not a gain machine, more open and natural sounding. If he had an Aldrich mod he had the gain on 1/2 maybe.

Good point! I had a chance to hang out with Reb Beach a few years ago when he was touring with Night Ranger. His rig? A JCM900 with a Boss DS-1...that's it! A year later we hung out again before a Winger show...all he had then was a CAA OD100 and a couple of pedals on the floor, not even on a board.

 Ever since after AD he has been using the 2205's. That Hendrix wah was one I kept after doing a shootout of a few. Here he is talking about his recent gear where he is using rack delay units.

Back during the time of Total Control(1987) he did not use a Cameron. During the recording of AD he had a massive amount of gain coming through his amps.

Since that gear interview he's gone back to passive pickups too. I suspect he still sticks with rack delays but read in a recent interview that he really digs the carbon copy. All depends on the tour i guess. Sometimes if they are playing for other bands (dokken, or guest appearances) I am pretty sure they are fine with a delay pedal in the loop and a pedal or two on the floor. As for the wah, i find he uses it tastefully. Doesn't really annoy me as he brings it in and out along with what sounds like the les paul in the middle position between the two pickups for some fatness or quackiness. Him and Bonamassa seem to be pals. Watched a few vids of them playing at each other's shows. Bonamassa i think has the slight advantage of a wider repertoire of licks but Norum has the tone, the attack, and the vibrato of the gods!

Agreed, he really knows how to use the wah.

But still, id love to hear a little less wah!
