How different does a Jubilee 2555 sound vs a 2203?

I may be in the minority, but I just sold my JCM2555 after fighting it for a couple of years. I just could not get the sound I wanted out of it, so I finally acepted defeat and sold it.

Anyway, an early 800 boosted with a pedal is the hammer of the gods.

Anything in particular that bugged you about it? Not really sure how big of an effect the diodes have on the tone since the amp has solid state clipping. My main marshally sound atm comes from my Metro that I converted to a 2203 w/ a extra preamp tube.

2203 is thicker, ballsier and clearer. The Jubilee has 2 channels so you can get a nice clean/crunch rhythm tone and a nice high gain lead tone. The master on the jubilee seems to be more gradual. IMO a 2203 with a good boost will smoke a jubilee but you will need a boost to get the gain a jube has.

I am terrible at trying to describe sound, but it was too bright and harsh. To my ears it never had enough low end or clarity. I finally gave up when I got my Friedman modded superlead. I sold it to a friend, and he loves the thing, so I guess it was just me.

I am pretty traditional when it comes to rock tones, but I just could not dial it in.

For the record, I tried several tubes and had it checked and biased a couple of times.

Ironically one of the offers I got for it was a '82 2203 and $1,000, but I already have three Marshalls that do what I want.

I had 50 watt versions of both amps. An '82 2204 and an '89 2550. Since the power sections are the same, I was able to dial in the 2550 to be very close to my 2204. The 2550 was more versatile but I preferred the 2204 tone in the end and sold the 2550. I still have the 2204.

One interesting thing I noted. I have a stash of NOS Mullards (pre and power) and, while my 2204 demands their use, the 2550 didn't seem to care. No appreciable increase in tone with the Mullards over other tubes in the 2550. Not saying that would be the case all the time. Maybe it was just the two samples I had.

I have actually never played a JCM800, though hear it plenty in recordings and clips. What is your JCM800 2203 type amp not doing for you now? What are you hoping to gain with the Jubilee?

I am really not sure its worth it to have both. If you want kind of a souped up JCM800, that in a nutshell is what the Silver Jubilee is. I love mine, when I first heard the distortion channel, I was like that is it. Like any marshall, it sounds better with some volume.....
