how many of you spend more time researching/buying gear...

than actually playing?

I came to realization a while back that I was spending more time looking for my "next guitar" than actually playing.

Even now, as a dad with a 1 year old, I have some nice gear, but I don't get to play much(when the baby is sleeping only). If I get 30 min a day, I'm happy!!!

Of course, it's easier to find time surfing the web... so I find myself looking at gear more.

How about you?

Way more time researching that playing hear. Been dealing with wrist and shoulder injuries that limit how much I can play, not to mention a leaky basement music room. I am hoping it will turn around soon.

Seeing as how rock music is pretty much dead, what else is there to do?

I get grouchy when I'm sick... :boxer:

Finally have my dream rig and I feel like I have so much more time on my hands now....quitting gear hunting was harder than quitting smoking though!!!

90% of everyone on this site. 100% of posters in this thread.

Guilty. If I was as good at playing as I was at buying gear I'd be the next EVH.

Nope.

I just played for 3 hours yesterday after doing homework. I still manage to play 3-5 times a week while attending school and working full time. It also helps that I like to be alone

New gear is fun but playing/learning is where it's at.

Rock is at it's least popular point right now more than I can ever remember.....in the USA. Good thing that's not the case in other parts of the world.

I made the swing several years ago and decided to just play guitar. I got tired of building them, parting them together ans working on them. If I'm in the market for a new piece of gear I do minimal research just to be certain I really want or need it, once I make that determination I focus on getting for the best deal.

People spend way too much time analyzing products and tone from YouTube. Lets make a decision on a product by watching an audio/video source compressed way down from the original file for YouTube where end users typically are listening on cheaper, non studio grade speakers ;) We hear people make decisions on speakers, pickups and whatnot solely based on youtube clips.

Forums also keep folks from playing where majority of the time is spent talking about it versus doing it....we hear terms like open, lush, organic etc...WTH does this mean? Shut up and play my guitar is where I'm at :)

This whole thread is organic, it has such a 3D feel

What's left of rock music survives today as new country. I'm waiting for the day when Nashville begins showcasing 'rappers' The Grand Ole Opry.

I go in phases. Last summer, I hardly checked into the forums at all and I was constantly playing in two bands. Lately, I've been on the forums and wiring/soldering guitars much more than actually playing.

To the OP, I definitely know what you mean about having less time to play - when kids come into your life, you completely change in every way and that includes cutting way back on jam time. Thing is (for me at least) I would rather be with my kids than playing guitar, even though music is extremely important to me. I played a few out of town gigs during the first two years of fatherhood and I couldn't wait to get back home. Now that my kids are almost 5 and 2, I find that I have a little more time to play and scheduling band practice and gigs is getting easier.

That's a majority of my day! It's way easier to research and hunt during the day (while I'm supposed to be working) than practice. And when I'm actually off, there's usually life things going on.

Good call on the stealth edit there.

I research more when I am restless. I found playing metal really was easy on the GAS as you just find a guitar loaded with hot pickups, plug into a noise gated 5150 and tremolo pick :D Doing covers and trying to cover a lot of ground makes it a little more challenging (and opens up options that aren't there in original metal land)

I play far less than I should/want to, but I spend no time researching gear so I still spend more time playing than freakin' on gear.

I've noticed about this forum that if you post a thread about music either a band or song that the thread usually sinks fast if it's not related to Van Halen or Jake E Lee. Or if ignites a flame war, see Avenged Seven Fold thread. I post about new stuff I hear about and the threads get maybe 6 - 8 replies and that's it, but the latest pink vagina or deep brown asshole mod get pages of talk about that missing tone that has eluded guys for years.

I think that's pretty common with forums. Even though music is inherently the foundation of all this, people seem to generally not be terribly interested in members musical submissions, and there's only so much you can say about why you love British Steel, Diver Down or whatever..
