How much gear is too much? ...

Here's what I've got right now...
- an Egnater M4 rack setup with Digitech GSP1101, VHT 2/50/2, and two 4x12 cabs
- Randall RM50 and RM100 combos
- Egnater JTM45 head
- (9) modules

Here's what I've got going in the musical world right now...
- a rock band that isn't gigging, is struggling to record a demo, and will probably break up before anything happens since the drummer's about to go on "paternity leave"
- a jazz gig where we've got about one rehearsal and one gig a month for 8 months out of the year
- a killer recording setup where nothing gets recorded, mostly because nothing's getting written
- an acoustic trio (go figure) that practices and gigs more than we know what to do with

So why do I have all this stuff? Mostly carry-over from when I did have a couple of successful bands going + plenty of time for songwriting/recording.

There is a point to this thread... My amp gear, cool as it is, is grossly underutilized right now. So that got me thinking... what if I sold off my modular gear (heck, pretty much everything but the JTM45 head), picked up a couple small tubey combos, and in the process put a lot of $ in the bank (and a lot less stuff in the basement). How long would it be before I'd completely kick myself for selling it? How much would I miss the versatility? Or would I never notice because I spend so little time playing these days? Discuss... :)

Dude, don't sweat it.

I have more gear than you and I only play out acoustic or with whatever the studio has.

You would just buy when we come out with new stuff anyway!

Don't let the gear guilt get to you...I have possibly as much as that..plus 8 guitars...and I only play for my own amusement

Most of us probably have more gear than we NEED. Its only too much if you cant afford it and/or dont want it all.

That is a rhetorical question, right? Like asking how much money is too much, if the ocean is too wet, or your girl is too beautiful? ;)

Keep the modules, sell everything else, buy a MOD 50 and Egnater 1X12 cab. Still have money left for a Rebel, when it comes out, and then get in that studio and start writing man!!!!

That's just what I would do.

Or just do whatever makes you feel good about it. I hear what you're saying though, sometimes you have to re-think your situation and purge some stuff.

There are two rules to gear acquisition that I use to keep my GAS at "habit" level, and from advancing to "addiction" level:

1) Try to sell off something that you don't use when you buy something new; even if you can't keep the cash outlay at zero, still it cuts it down.

2) Make sure you use everything you buy, even if you use some things more than others.

At least, that's what I try to do... ;)

Well, I'm of the "life is short" mentality so I think you should enjoy your gear even if that means just owning it and looking at it sit in the corner. There are no rules. Guitar players are by default, gear collectors. That said, I recently went through a massive down-sizing. I'm not even quite finished. I had 7 guitars, one of which I built and 3 amps. That's the most I've ever had at once. Then I realized that while I liked having it all, I didn't use it all. So I sold 5 guitars (3 EBMMs and 2 Carvins) and ordered a new Suhr Modern. I'm about to buy a 2nd Suhr as soon as I decide which one. So for me, I'd rather have fewer guitars of the highest quality rather than more guitars of mainstream quality. I've begun the same with my amps. That's why I ordered an M4. I've already sold my Mesa Studio Pre and Mesa 50/50 and will now unload my Carvin Legacy. I still have a Mesa Road King II and Mesa 4x12 Recto cab but I think those are going to stay for the time being. Once I get the M4 and can actually play the EG5, I'll know whether I'm going to continue with the Egnater stuff or not.

Bottom line is, right now, I'd rather have fewer pieces of higher-end equipment.

I totally agree. Having a few real high end pieces is much better than a ton of mediocre equipment. After getting my Suhr guitars I cant imagine playing anything else.

What Suhrs do you have? I've got the Modern on order but may be picking up a used 07 Standard.

How do you like your Suhr Modern? I just saw one of htose the other day. Absolutely beautiful guitar! How does it play compared to your EBMM? Ever since I got my EBMM JP7, I hardly ever pick up my Ibanez, unless I want to do some single coil tones.

Well, I won't have it till July. I really liked the 2 Petruccis I had but I just decided I didn't want to play signature models anymore. I used to think people who felt that way were odd but I suddenly fell into that line of thinking. I played a Suhr at a local shop and saw the fit and finish, felt the playability and heard the tone and new I would end up switching. It was hard selling my Petruccis and my Luke (and my Carvins for that matter) but in the end, once I sold the first, the rest were easy. I still have a Carvin 7 string that I really love. When Suhr puts out a 7 string, if I can afford it, I'd probably sell the Carvin but maybe not. The Carvin is great guitar and it's not sig so I'll probably keep it.

Dave,

Ive got two Standards:

Aged CherryBurst, Mahogany Body w/ Maple Top, Mahogany Neck, H-S-H (DSV-V60LP-DSH+), Gotoh 1055 bridge (this is the guitar in my avatar and easily my main instrument)

TobaccoBurst, Mahogany Body, Mahogany Neck, H-H (SSV-SSH+), Gotoh 1055 Bridge

I used to play a MusicMan Petrucci. Trust me when I say that you will not miss it one bit. I like MusicMans very much and the Petrucci is a great instrument but the tone cannot compare to a Suhr. Everything about John's instruments are top notch in every respect. I havent played a Tyler or Grosh, but compared to everything Ive played, the Suhrs are easily a cut above.

The Modern wasnt announced yet when I got my Standards, but for me Im ok with it since I never used my 24th fret (unless I was playing the "Spirit Carries On" solo!) on my Petrucci.

You will love your Suhr! What are the specs?

Junk...play a banjo!

Have you guys played the new Taylor electrics yet? I got a chance to spend a good hour with one the other day and they are incredible.

You mean the T5? Ive played it and its definitely nice but wouldnt use it for anything high gain. I basically consider it a glorified piezo guitar.

My Modern is mahogany body and neck with a Pau Ferro board. Jumbo Stainless frets, a recessed Gotoh 510 trem, abalone dots and logo, black headstock, the thicker of the two neck profiles (which is still way skinny), 1 11/16" nut, DSH and DSV, Chrome, Bengal finish over flamed maple. I cannot wait to get it. I almost bought an 07 Standard today but I've decided to order a 2nd Modern with different wood, pups and the Gotoh Floyd.
