I'm looking HARD at buying an SD II 18 head, but can't try one. I've heard nothing but good from owners, but don't find many clips.

Basically, I want more of a Plexi/brown sound, yet high gain, and aggressive with a boost. Take your pick - I have a Maxon OD808, Wylde OD, or Fulltone OCD for added horsepower/grit.

It's been described as such, a bit darker plexi tone, yet high gain, & articulate. I'm looking for those articulate lead tones, but I also want tight & focused on the rhythm, which is why I use a boost anyway. Also have an MXR 10-band for the loop..

If my Avatar is any indication, that Iced Earth tightness would be ideal.

Not sure about the 18 or 30, but this is my SD80 II with a boost. Main difference would be the 80 has a SS rectifier and 6L6's. So my guess is that this amp would sound tighter and bigger as a result. I'm sure the smaller wattage ones still get this aggressive with a boost in front of the preamp.

I played both. I really wouldn't desrcibe them as a high gain, plexi or brown sounding amp. I didn't have a TS to push it with. I feel this would have gotten me closer to a sound I like. Something about the midrange I didn't like. The clean channel was pretty good though. It could also be pushed for some breakup.
