How often does a Marshall opportunity like this come along?

I don't really need another amp, let alone a 100 watt Marshall, but a local'ish guy is selling his old amp. I'll just copy/paste his ad:

I’m selling my 78 Superlead with Matching Cab. I’ve owned this combo for 20+ years and it’s never let me down. Originally equipped with 6550s and no master volume, I’ve made the completely reversible changes to EL34s, a post phase inverter MV, and clipped the bright cap. No drilled holes, cuts, etc. This setup is clean but def player condition. It’s also ungodly loud. I’ve maintained this amp regularly so all tubes, tube sockets, input jacks, filters, caps are good. Original transformers. It never got hot rodded and chopped. I’m not interested in trades. Amp is located in Northern Maine. Plenty more pics, etc for active buyers.

He's asking $2500.

Hard pass bro. Where’s the ad btw?

Are the late 70s amps just not worth much or something? I'm not familiar with how the late 70s stuff is, just that everyone has boners for all things early 80s 800s and Plexi models.

I’d have to know more about the cabinet and what speakers are in it. It’s close to break even if the cabinet is a wash.

The amp is great and 78 is a great year and it’s 6550. It’s the cabinet that could be a dud.

He was being sarcastic as hell ???

I messaged him to see if he could send over the other pics or give me any other information on it.

Should be a killer amp; as long as it has the original Dagnall transformers and everything else checks out. First thing, I'd ask about the bright cap because you will absolutely want that back in, of if it's simply clipped you can ask him to solder it back. Very easy. Clipping those neuters the amp, period. Dumbest thing ever IMO. If people don't want all that gain and power, buy a Twin. It'll be loud but clean and dark. Lol. If he totally got rid of that bright cap, I highly recommend you find a 5K and put one in. Also, you'll want to get rid of that master vol as that also changes the tone. They sound best totally original...get a good distortion pedal like a BE OD or have Griff make you a clone...the cool thing about a Dist pedal is, there's your MV right there on the pedal. The volume knob will attenuate it perfectly. The speakers look like they have small dust caps, could be vintage blackbacks too.

2500 for that amp, you're almost getting the cab for free. Go get it.

He's supposed to send me the pics but says the cab is available for $500 more. It's misleading as it sounds like the halfstack is $2500. Ill likely pass.

If he'll take a pic of the back of the cab off, so you can see what's in there I'd still consider it if they are original BBs. You could easily sell the cab for 1500..The amp is then 1500, and still a steal.

"I’m selling my 78 Superlead with Matching Cab."

VERY misleading. Maybe an honest typo but with the way the ad reads he is probably fielding tons of questions - most of which are also probably very similar.

There's deals out there. Last two JMP's I picked up local were $2200 and $1600. Both late 70's 2203's and clean/ original.

If the cab is from 78 too, it either has blackbacks or g12-65. I had a 78 with blackbacks, after that the transition to g12-65 happened

Its such a weird market right now.. there are deals like this comingled with guys asking 3k for a JVM...lol
