Any advice on how to get this tone? I heard he used a LOUD Mesa Colosseum whilst others say it was a modded Marshall

I have a Marshall JMP-1, Gallien Kreuger 250ml, ADA MP-1
Effectswise I have a Gmajor2

How close could I get?

Solo has kind of a half cocked wah sound to it.

I can hear it too, it's similar to his tone on 1987 with Whitesnake, just such a cool mid-bass chug then squeely solo tone. Never heard it replicated by anyone else

Unfortunately I don't think you will get that tone from the cab sims that you are using.. it is raw and cranked and layered and probably a lot of sm57 in the mix plus a room mic. (much like you already do) I think those Gibson dirty finger pups bring the bite and the gain is either modded Marshall or Mesa or hell, maybe both amps blended for all we know. But mostly, it is just how awesome Sykes is as a player. I noticed a bit of his influence in your lead playing with some of the fast alternate picking runs you do. I mean, who doesn't like Sykes? Monster player and monster singer and looked cool to boot! Oh, and I LOVE the big ass verbed out sound of those drums!! 80's drums baby. The best. Not like that dry clickie shit everyone goes with now. That's why the material sounded so much more epic.

It's a huge compliment for you to say my lead playing has influences from Sykes! haha Usually I just get called Yngwie on a slow day haha.

So your advice would be to get things mic'd up? How about if I ran my SM57 infront of my JMP-1 with EL84 20/20 cracked in stereo with an ambient condenser sitting further back. Tap Delay, little bit of chorus and reverb?

Someone once mentioned he used a crap done of harmonizer on 1987.

Also love the drum sound!

Yup I think you would get the sound you are looking for with that approach. I think your method already has the "fullness" for that sound so you might want to do what you do and track a L and R and then copy those to the opposite side so you get a 4 guitar stereo image. The real mic will give you the clarity and bite.

I listened to a few more tunes from the Blue Murder album and that wah is used a lot on the leads. A sort of half cocked thing going on alla Shenker except he doesn't rock it as much for a slow sweep as Shenker did at times live. It is more of a set it and forget it thing. Probably just took the top plate off and stepped on it as needed. Cool sound. Wonder what WAH he was using? I am in the market for a wah that I can get a nice sweet spot out of.

Ironically that's already what I do! 4 stereo image, creates that washy sound I like. I really need to move somewhere I can mic and really blast it.

I'd like to know what Wah it is too, a pretty cool unique solo tone which is nice to hear. Get fed up of the ADA MP-1 shreddy tone after a while!

I know, I got that idea from you lol! Sounds awesome. You just need a real mic. You could try a 2x12 cab behind some insulation panels but the bass still travels. I like to play this way and i can crank my amps enough for it not to affect earphone listening but the bass resonates all the way up my house from basement to second floor. No avoiding that.

Have John Sykes come over and play for you then it will sound pretty close!

Mesa Mark iii into EVM 12l 200 watt speakers will get you close. He used Mesa on the 1987 Whitespace album and the Blue Murder stuff.

Saw that trio live and he was using rectifiers, but this was after the 2nd album which wasn't anywhere near as cool as the first. Killer band. Sykes is amazing. And a good singer as well. Always heard it was Mark 3 Coliseums.....also heard he slaved mark 3 colis into the strategy 400 power amps! Holy hell that's some friggin power!!

Nice! I can cop that tone with either Mark 2C+ I have into an old Marshall cab with 65s. I have a 60w and a 100/60...I've gone to the 'Mark' side lol....

Dude, this was an epic fail.. had me pissed. I could not get that lush distortion but clear tone at the same time.. plus I can barely play the song.. I know it's not right.. I was going after the tone... plus my reverb is nothing like theirs.. don't laugh too hard. I'm also in c# instead of d.

Anybody get close? if ya did, how? 'cause it's got me mad now...
