I just got a Charvel pro mod sd and it has 2 shims under the nut making the string height too high. I removed one of the shims and it is better but what is the correct height supposed to be and how do you go about measuring it? Looked on youtube but everything was for a std nut, nothing for a floyd.

Fret a note lightly at the third fret. Now look at the gap between string and first fret. It should have a tiny, tiny gap. The third and sixth strings vibrate wider so they need a little more gap than say the first string.

Appreciate the help. I think it's still a little too high with the one shim in, so I'll see what happens when I remove it. Might just need a thinner shim.

what the others said. the gap should be really minimal, like one hair for the thinnest string and two-three hair for the thickest string.
Or measuring the distance between the string and the first fret, without anything fretted: I measure about 0,3-0,4 mm on the thinnest and 0,5-0,6 mm on the thickest string

.020 low E&A under 1st first fret. D&G .018 and .016 B&E.
