How would a 5150 cabinet match with a 1960 cab?

Title says it all. Saw a great deal on a mint 5150 slant cabinet for $200. Think it would compliment by Marshall 1960? I play in standard D usually...I have a stereo power amp and am currently running it in mono. Think it will be a good addition to make a stereo rig?

I love my 5150 cab with my Marshall 425a cab... seems to help define the lows somewhat.

having owned both, i highly suggest you grab the 5150 cabinet. the 5150 cabinet blows the marshalls out of the water IMHO. No contest. It was not difficult for me to decide which of my three cabinets to unload first - marshall 1983 JCM900 lead series, or one of my 5150 cabinets.

Grab it and see - the speakers in that cabinet are worth that alone. They are built like tanks.

I wanted to save up to replace my Chameleon for a ENGL...but I have the cash now for this. Think I might pull the trigger. The only thing holding me back is my OCD...I like to have matching cabs haha

I always loved the 5150 cabs...especially with the Peavey 5150 amps. My main setup from 93 on for a good decade. Those cabs IMO also sound the best with all of Peavey's high gain heads...JSX, XXX etc... I'd say that probably would still be the case with the newer XXXII the 3120's etc... Great cabs. Gotta bad rap from the anti Peavey guys but they were all birch ply barring the back panel. I played hundreds of shows with them back in the day and only lost one speaker the whole time.

Go for it! Killer speakers, just make sure it's got the original speakers in it (Sheffield 1200). They will bring some low end to the your game!

Wow, I'm surprised with the 5150 4x12 love displayed here. Oddly you don't see that much. That said I really like mine. The Sheffields are supposedly custom Greenback inspired units. High wattage with a tad more highs and lows than a Greenback. They also have an inherent scooped tone. To me, this pairs great with a midrange heavy amp like the 5150. They have more character and woodiness than the Celestion 75's (75s sounded sterile to me) It's worth noting, the construction is much better than the Marshall. Had both, sold the Marshall a long time ago after I removed the back. Cheap cheap cheap...from the jack, to the wire, back, joints, etc. Good riddance. :bleh:

I guess you can file that thread from yesterday about your rig being done in the garbage.

Guilty I suppose. I go through phases.

I have played 5150s since about 97, and I can honestly say that (in my opinion) the matching 5150 cabinet is the worst match for the 5150 head...Undefined, whoofy sounding lows, way to "scooped" sounding and exacerbates the spikey sizzle that the head is inclined towards.

Best cabs that I have matched with the 5150/5150 II

Marshall cab (gt-75s)

Mesa Standard cab (V-30s)

Bogner Uber-Kab

Just my opinion.

I second this post above. I thought the 5150 cabs were very scooped sounding and the build quality isn't nearly as good as a Marshall. A Marshall cab with Greenbacks or 75's will dirt it in my opinion.

The tone is obviously subjective but the build quality is all birch ply...same as Marshall. Both have particle board backs. Handles on the Peavey are more heavy duty IMO...casters are average at best on both. Fact is...the build quality for each is extremely similiar. Personally...I've had great success with both.

the sheffield speakers are very transparent to the true amplifier tone. Not much tonal character like the speakers mentioned above - they are very neutral, and the magnets are pretty damn big. If you're looking for speaker character to add to your tonal pallet, then sheffields are definitely the wrong place to look. Like them or hate them - they take a pounding.

cabinet wise - all birch baffle, birch cabinet, 9 ply construction and built like brick shit houses - each cabinet weighs in at 101-110lbs loaded on my end. I have to agree with jabps. You're entitled to your opinion but dont confuse line 6 or crate cabinets with 5150 cabinets. The 5150 cabinets i own do their job and do it well.
