How's the POD HD500? Newer filmware? Good tones? Any owners?

I'm tired of buying amps, and am seriously considering the modelling route, through the front of my Blackstar's clean channel.

I know Line6 has released newer filmware since it's been introduced, and have read mixed reviews. I'd be after cleans, as well as mid-gain, and high gains. I've heard some clips of the newer filmware, and the Recto, and Fireball models sound pretty sweet!

Opinions?

i use one at home through a ht-5 into a 2x12 cab

4cm is pretty sweet, use all the effects and clean preamps,
if you're running a modelling preamp you should run it through the amp return in any case

but no matter what i do to set it up, the ht-5 distortion is simply nicer imo just feels better to me, i leave it on the od channel with mid gain, and add distortion/boosts via the pod to boost the front end and it works well for me at least

so with the way i've hooked it up i just use the pod hd for the clean amp sims, and the ht-5 for the main dirt tones, with some extra boost/od from the pod

it's a great little device in any case,

modellers always sound like shit through the front end, you'll have much better results if you feed one directly to the poweramp of the amp that you are using

Ive been thinking of selling my Ultra and Picking up a HD500 while waiting on my AFX II. I had a M13 a few years ago and was happy with the effects but I couldnt switch my amps and effect via midi the way I wanted. I even thought about pairing it up with a DT50 head or 2x12 combo.

Lots of speculation on it over there. Rumored to have better AD/DA converters and twice the dsp power, and many think that this is so you can load your cab IR's. If this is true, I will probably pick one up.

True, but it disables your amp's controls, including the volume.
I HATE that. Unless, of course, you run it through the loop of the HD, to loop of amp?

it doesn't disable the volume, but yes the preamp controls are bypassed, you still have a master volume on the amp itself//or whatever the clean volume control is

as well as the master volume on the podhd which controls the overall volume

here's the post on running the pod hd500 in a 4cable method

For the money it's pretty much untouchable...100+ FX, preamp models, USB for recording, full sims, FX loop, inbuilt foot controller and it can act as a solid midi controller board.

It sounds pretty solid through a poweramp or transparent FX return. Not that much different than an amp.

I've extensively A/B'd mine with my preamps and Yeti and it does a very decent job. I espec like the Deluxe Rev, Recto, JTM, Park and JCM800 models.

It's not like old pods as it sounds great for mid gain where old pods just did high gain only. For the money, it's certainly worth a test drive.

It paid for itself for a grab n go unit, midi controller for my rack...fx unit and preamp models for my poweramp. Can't ask for much more than that IMHO.

I like it. I still think it sounds best into a tube power amp, only using the pre models (Bypassing the poweramp modeling, which defeats the purpose of the newest update...) but, I pretty much feel that way about all modeling units.

Its a pretty good sounding unit, lots of effects/toys, it integrates pretty well with other gear, and is just a pretty good overall unit to have around. I mostly bought mine to run 4CM with my tube heads, but I have had a lot of fun with it as a standalone unit.
