I Built Another Pedalboard

I don't have pics of it, so come back later if that's what you're after. The story is good though.

A buddy of mine does a band called Psycho Plantation, and he did guest vocals on a song I wrote with Something Involving A Monkey. Now that SIAM is done, we decided he should have the song for his band and I'll guest vocal for it, so I went to their practice to give them the song. I decided to bring my bass pedalboard for show and tell, since I love it when people play with my Nutz.

Their bassist is (admittedly) pretty ignorant on bass gear. He always just used whatever and plugged straight in. He was dumbfounded by my pedalboard. It completely blew his mind. He and the guitarist had talked about getting him pedals, and now it was clear why. He loved the compressor evening out his playing, and the boosts, and the Darkglass B7K. During their practice, I kept kicking on random effects and fucking with him, kicking in the delay at the tail of songs and stopping parts. He'd look back at his cab confused and then look at me and laugh. He was too high for the Transmisser when I played with the filter sweep knob.

He now wants to buy pedals, and it just so happens that I'm selling some. The B7K was only on my board as a placeholder until my Omega Drive comes in. I told him I have an old board laying around and I could build him a pedalboard for about a grand, and he got excited.

I went home and got to work. I used my old bass board I built and started populating it. I put the Darkglass B7K Ultra on it, with my old MXR M87 Bass Compressor, my spare Beez Nutz pedal, and an old Wampler Clean Buffer. I went out and bought a Peterson Strobostomp Mini for it too, with his blessing. That's pretty much the best of the best right there. It just needed a power supply, and my old Voodoo Lab PP2+ won't fit under that board. I ordered the Truetone 1 Spot Pro CS6 for it, which was the right one for features, size, and cost.

They have a gig tonight, and the power supply is backordered I guess. So, to finish the build, I stole the Cioks DC7 off my bass board to loan it out. I wired it all up and took it to his practice last night. He didn't know it was coming.

When I got there, he greeted me by saying he couldn't stop thinking about his bass tone last week and wanted to get a pedalboard, not knowing I had his board built in the case in my hand. He was floored that I had built it that quick (a week), and how it came out. I gave him the tour and taught him what's what. We dialed it in as his bandmates showed up. They all think the band sounds better now.

The best part was watching him run their set. Most of the songs are just straight up distortion, so not much to do but leave the pedals on. Some of the funky parts, however, could use fome funk, and the Beez Nutz has the funk. I watch the light bulb go on in his head as he looked at his new pedalboard, but was afraid to use it. After the song, he confessed to wanting to turn it on, but wasn't sure. That ran the funky section again and he tried it and it was awesome. It was like watching someone discover their instrument all over again. He was full of child-like awe and wonder.

I ended up $50 over budget, but most of the build was my old hand-me-downs. I'll lose $50 and donate the labor to this cause. I still feel like we're both winning here. I off some old gear, and it gets a new home where it's loved and appreciated. Since I donated my power supply to the cause as a loaner, he got to test drive it and approve of it, and he'll use it for the show. Then I'll take it back and finish it when his power supply gets in. It gives him time to get the money order so he's not dropping a grand at once. We split it into two and he's giving me half at the show and half when it's finished.

We're both really excited for this. I post up pictures when I get it back and finish the build.

Not sure about effects and such but my bro @Juggernaut really gave me an education on bass shit. I thought guitars were pricey… quality bass guitars are fucking EXPENSIVE! Still can’t wrap my head around why something that just goes dum dum dum dee dumdum costs so much money….🤪😂. Jk….

Here's his first gig through a pedalboard. He didn't manipulate it much; Just left the B7K on most of the time. He's gotta get used to it.
