I don't use pedals, but....

The OG was great because it was cheap and clean. It didn't have a voice like a TS or other boosts. It was your amp with more gain. No color or character.

Sure, some people like the character. I'm on a kick with Echoplex preamps for that mid boost. I'm definitely interested in a Badder Monkey though because I always liked the original.

After reading a bit:

I don't like the "clever" naming of the knobs. I don't want to be on stage thinking, "What does 'Curiosity' do again?"

I do like the reversible base plate idea. That is neat.

I know Cam and he's a monster player. Does the VH thing better than most. That's cool that Digitech clipped his video in, but as a YT schlock creator-shill myself, I kind of feel like it robs his video of views, which has only been up a day or two. They usually ask but not always.

This. I prefer it over the Dirty Tree and the Koko boost, although those are not based on a tube screamer. There is a mod (C23 swap or something?) to make the OG Bad Monkey even more clean.

Speaking of cheap boosts from back in the day, I used an arion tubulator for years back in college, I think it was $15 from musiciansfriend. Still have it.

Some YouTube infloooencer must have made a video about them at some point, used prices on reverb are pretty hilarious. At least the bad money is made of metal.

JHS did a video a while back about their search for the best Klon clone.

Weirdly, they discovered that the Bad Monkey sounded just like it. Not “a little bit“ like it. Literally exactly like it. After that video, the price on the things spiked and everybody bought them, you couldn’t find them anywhere. And as a bonus, in true Fucking Moron Guitar Player fashion, everybody was pissed at Josh Scott for “ruining” the secret even though those same people never would have known about it if he hadn’t have talked about it anyway.

To me, this reads like Digitech wanting to get back in on the action of their secret Klon clone now that the word is out. But it seems dumb because this new thing is not a copy of the old pedal, which means they might just be trying to leverage the name? I don’t know, seems weird to me.

Yes, its called trade your bad monkey for a sparkle drive, which have a literal clean blend knob and cost almost nothing

Based knower

Eventually JHS is going to do a voodoo labs episode and ruin it for us, but until he does, you can find them in every pawn shop in america for 40 or 50 bucks

And I gotta say, even if they cost twice that, the sparkle drive is the best tube screamer clone on the market by a wide, wide margin

Dont get me wrong the original bad monkey sounds great - they ALL sound great - but the whole allure was the cost to tone ratio, and the bad monkey is no longer in that fight

anytime you guys want a Monkey ...... let me know ...... I'll do a few cheap for you guys ...
